Responsible Professional Judgement

Responsible professional judgement turns an ethical concern into a decision another person can understand and audit. It distinguishes compliance from justification, defines the actionable issue, maps affected stakeholders and separates evidence from assumptions. The chapter shows how to compare feasible options and write a recommendation that names its responsibility, safeguard, limitation and review point.

Review automated applicant screening

Q [4 marks]. Recommend how a team should respond when an automated screen rejects applicants with career gaps but lacks validated performance evidence. These marks are used to stage the practice response and are not a university allocation. The marks shown for answer development are not an official university marking scheme.
  • 1Define the decision and the evidence gap.
  • 1Identify affected stakeholders and unequal exposure.
  • 1Compare pause, continuation and controlled-pilot options.
  • 1Recommend human review, validation, disclosure and monitoring.
Pause automatic rejection and validate job-related criteria across applicant groups. Keep trained human review, disclose the tool's role and monitor outcomes before wider use.
Sia tip — Put the affected stakeholder and safeguard in the same sentence as the recommendation.

FAQ

Responsible Professional Judgement FAQ

How is judgement different from opinion?

Judgement makes its evidence, criteria, stakeholder effects, alternatives and limitations visible, allowing another person to challenge or audit the reasoning. The chapter method applies this point to ethics in ordinary professional work and shows how it changes a practical decision.

What should a recommendation contain?

Name the decision owner, action, reason, safeguard, material trade-off and review point so the advice can be implemented and tested. The chapter method applies this point to compliance and justification and shows how it changes a practical decision.

Study strategy

Assessment move

After each case, write the decision in one sentence, list facts separately from assumptions, identify the least powerful affected group and compare the preferred option with the strongest alternative.

Build a detailed working note from the chapter: C1 · JUDGEMENT MAP Responsible professional judgement F-EVIDENCE · WEEK 1 Move from personal reaction to a reasoned account of responsibility ethics · stakeholders · evidence · uncertainty Responsible business professionalism begins with a practical question: what should a person do when commercial pressure, institutional rules and human consequences point in different directions;

The course treats ethics as part of ordinary professional work, not as an optional discussion after the business decision has already been made; A professional must notice who is affected, identify what is uncertain, test the available reasons and remain accountable for the choice;

Judgement is more than compliance Compliance asks whether an action fits a rule; Ethical judgement asks whether the action can be justified to the people who bear its effects; Rules still matter, but they rarely settle every boundary case;

A policy may permit a shortcut while a stakeholder faces a foreseeable harm; a familiar practice may be efficient while distributing risk unfairly; The responsible response is to name that tension and examine it directly;

Professional judgement People affected Decision owners Evidence holders Future interests Judgement is relational; A defensible decision connects affected people, authority, evidence and consequences rather than treating ethics as private intuition;

4 evidence questions 1 decision owner 1 review point Question What a strong analysis supplies Who is affected; Specific groups, interests and exposure What is known; Relevant evidence and its limits Who decides; Authority, duties and accountability What follows;

Short and long-term consequences ✓ Write the tension before the recommendation Use one sentence that places two legitimate demands in conflict; That sentence gives the rest of the analysis a job: compare reasons, not slogans;

C1 · ACCOUNTABLE ADVICE From instinct to an accountable recommendation CASE · APPLICATION A short method for turning concern into professional advice issue · stakeholders · options · reasons · review A decision record that another person can audit Start by defining the decision at the level where action is possible;

“Technology is risky” is too broad; “whether a recruitment team should use an automated ranking tool without human review” names an actor, a practice and a control point; Next distinguish facts from assumptions; Record whose interests may be advanced or harmed, including people with little formal power and people affected later;

Generate at least two feasible options so the preferred path is genuinely compared rather than announced; RECOMMENDATION SENTENCE Decision claim: Given this evidence and these stakeholder effects, choose this action because it best protects the stated responsibilities, while managing this named limitation;

MODEL A hiring-screening dilemma finished reasoning A graduate analyst learns that a screening tool rejects applicants whose career histories contain long gaps; The team values speed, but the analyst cannot show that gaps predict performance;

A defensible memo would pause automatic rejection, test outcomes across applicant groups, keep a trained human reviewer and disclose the tool's role; The recommendation protects operational value without treating efficiency as sufficient evidence;

It also admits a trade-off: review costs time, so the team should monitor turnaround and refine the process using validated job-related criteria; TRY 1 Boundary test AskSia practice Prompt: A supplier meets the contract but repeatedly schedules work with unsafe fatigue patterns;

What makes this an ethical issue rather than only a procurement issue; Answer: Contract compliance does not remove foreseeable worker harm or the buyer's leverage; The analysis should identify duty, influence and a remedy;

TRY 2 Recommendation check AskSia practice Prompt: Improve “the company should act ethically.” Answer: Name the decision owner, action, safeguard, evidence and review point; A recommendation becomes usable when responsibility and follow-up are explicit; A professional judgement is strongest when a sceptical reader can see what was considered, what was chosen and what remains uncertain; CLOSING MOVE · LEAVE AN AUDIT TRAIL.
