31247 Chap.12 Value Propositions, Business Models and Gantt Plans
Value Propositions, Business Models and Gantt Plans
Making the business case
Week 8 turns a solution into a proposal. A value proposition states why a customer or problem owner should choose your solution, the business model canvas lays out how it would work and be sustained, and a Gantt chart plans how it would be implemented.
Three tasks in the report
These are Tasks 3.1, 3.3 and 3.2 of the group report.
The rubric rewards six components of the value proposition, all nine canvas blocks, and a Gantt chart with all its components.
Writing methods from the lecture
The lecture gives three ways to draft a value proposition: Steve Blank’s we help X do Y by doing Z, Geoff Moore’s for a target customer who needs something, our product is a category that delivers benefits, and the Harvard Business School method’s four questions about the offer, the job it is hired for, the competition and what sets it apart.

Read the roster app’s twelve-week Gantt plan
- 1Durations: requirements 2 weeks, design 2, building 5, pilot 2 and training 1.
- 1Sequence: requirements, design, building and pilot run one after another, so together they take 11 weeks before launch in Week 12.
- 1Overlap: training runs in Week 10 alongside the pilot, so it adds no time to the plan.
- 1Risk: building is the longest task and every later task depends on it, so a delay there moves the launch.

Value Propositions, Business Models and Gantt Plans FAQ
What is the difference between a value proposition and a slogan?
A value proposition explains how the offer solves a problem, what specific benefits it brings and why it beats the alternatives. A slogan is a short, catchy line for a marketing campaign and says none of that.
What are the nine blocks of the business model canvas?
In the standard canvas they are customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships and cost structure. Task 3.3 asks you to complete all nine, with emphasis on the value proposition.
What should a Gantt chart for the report include?
The lecture describes a left side listing project details and a right side showing tasks over time with their connections and progress. The rubric’s top band asks for all components to be discussed, illustrated correctly and relevant to your proposal.
How is the value proposition assessed in the group report?
Task 3.1 asks you to identify the value proposition of the final solution, how it improves conditions for the people with the problem, its key benefits and costs, and how it would be viable, with a diagram and commentary. The rubric’s top band looks for six components adequately constructed and explained.
What elements does a finished value proposition have?
The lecture lists a headline giving the end benefit, a sub-headline or short paragraph explaining what is offered, to whom and why, and a visual element such as an image or infographic. The Value Proposition Canvas is the template the tutorial uses to build it.
Is a value proposition the same as a mission statement?
No. A mission statement describes what the organisation is trying to achieve and is goal-oriented. A value proposition is specific to the offer: the problem it solves, the benefits it brings and why a customer should choose it over alternatives.
Assessment move
Write your solution’s value proposition in both the Blank and Moore formats and check each names the customer, the problem and the benefit. Fill all nine canvas blocks on one page, then build a Gantt chart backwards from a launch week with dependencies drawn. Ask Sia to test whether your value proposition would survive a sceptical stakeholder, then revise it yourself.
Keep the three tools consistent; the canvas and the plan should describe the same solution.
