General and Specific Deductions

This chapter treats deductibility as a two-gate inquiry. First, the outgoing or loss must have the required connection with gaining assessable income or carrying on a business for that purpose. Second, it must survive the capital, private, domestic, exempt-income and statutory exclusions. The occasion of the outgoing is more informative than the taxpayer's label or motive.

Specific provisions can authorise, limit, spread or deny recognition, while mixed-purpose expenses require supported apportionment and clear records.

Labels such as travel, education or repair are only starting points. Client-to-client travel differs from ordinary commuting, current-skill maintenance differs from entry into a new profession, and restoration differs from replacing or improving an asset.

Once character is settled, choose the correct general, specific or capital-allowance route. Present the gross outgoing, any private or deferred component and the supported deductible amount on separate lines to prevent duplication.

Apportioning a mixed-use expense

Q [3 marks]. A consultant incurs $7,800 of supported annual equipment and service costs. Reliable records establish 65% income-producing use. Assume the amount contains no acquisition cost and no reimbursement. Calculate the work-related component. The marks shown provide revision structure and are not a University mark allocation.

  • +1Identify total supported expenditure of $7,800 and the evidenced income-producing use of 65%.
  • +1Calculate $7,800 times 65% = $5,070 work-related component.
  • +1Identify $2,730 as the excluded private component and flag any method-specific limit or capital treatment that still requires checking.
The supported income-producing component is $5,070 and the private component is $2,730, before any specific statutory adjustment.
Sia tip — The percentage is a legal and evidentiary input, not just arithmetic. Explain how it was established and keep private or reimbursed amounts visible.

FAQ

General and Specific Deductions FAQ

Is every work-related cost deductible?

No. The expense must have the required connection with current income-producing activities and survive the exclusions. Practical necessity or an employer expectation does not automatically defeat private character. Identify the occasion of the outgoing and the advantage obtained.

What makes an expense capital?

Look at what the payment secures. Establishing or improving the profit-yielding structure points toward capital, while operating or maintaining that structure points toward revenue. Frequency and size help but do not decide the question by themselves.

How do I handle a mixed-purpose expense?

Identify each purpose or use and apply a fair, evidence-based apportionment. Show the gross outgoing, supported business percentage, excluded private portion and deductible component. Then test whether a specific method, cap, record rule or reimbursement changes the result.

Study strategy

Exam move

For every expense, write five short lines: precise outgoing, income-producing activity, occasion and nexus, negative limbs, and specific provision or apportionment. Change the fact that creates the connection, such as current duties versus entry to a new profession, client-to-client travel versus commuting, or restoration versus improvement.

Keep a separate record checklist for invoices, logbooks, diaries, contracts and reimbursement evidence. Verify live rates and thresholds in current official material rather than memorising an old figure. Sort practice costs into immediate deduction, apportioned deduction, capital timing route and no deduction, but write a reason beside each placement. Redo the table after changing purpose or timing.

In calculations, show the work-use numerator and total-use denominator so an unsupported percentage cannot pass unnoticed. Run a final anti-duplication audit: mark whether each cost is claimed under a general provision, a specific provision, a capital allowance or a cost base. Then check reimbursement and private-use facts.

This extra pass prevents the same dollar from appearing in two routes and exposes costs whose recognition is deferred rather than lost.
