Competing Theories of Corporate Responsibility

Weeks 5 and 6 set four theories of what a corporation owes against each other, and then ask which of two frameworks fits a given problem. The chapter begins with what responsibility is a response to, pressure from workers, government, shareholders and advocacy organisations, and with the two readings of that response held open side by side.

It then establishes the kind of claim being made: a duty-based, deontological perspective under which actions are judged on their intrinsic character and conducted out of duty despite self-inclination, followed by twelve enumerated ethical expectations usable as a coverage checklist.

Shareholder value theory, corporate social performance, corporate citizenship and stakeholder theory are compared on who benefits and what justifies the obligation, and the chapter closes on three stated dimensions of difference and a deliberate selection rule.

Four sources of pressure, and two readings of the response held open

  • 02

Five named forms of responsibility initiative, three of them adjacent to the business

  • 03

Duty-based ethics, and why despite self-inclination is the clause that matters

  • 04

Twelve enumerated expectations, and the difference between presence and coverage

  • 05

Shareholder value theory and the constituency it omits

  • 06

Corporate social performance, reputational threat and public legitimacy

  • 07

Corporate citizenship and the political power critique

  • 08

Engagement rather than management, and why the words are not interchangeable

  • 09

Three dimensions of difference, and the rule for choosing a framework

Selecting the framework and saying why

Q [3 marks]. A food manufacturer is criticised over the water use of a processing plant in a drought-affected district where it is also the largest employer. Which framework, and why? Our practice weighting applies to the marks shown, which are not an official allocation for this subject.
  • +1Locate the issue. The water use is the production process and the affected community is also the workforce and the local supply base, so the issue is embedded in the core business rather than adjacent to it.
  • +1Choose on that basis. Stakeholder theory fits, because the analysis is about relationships in which value is created and traded off, and it can be run on the moral dimension without leaving the firm's operations.
  • +1Concede what the other frame would do. A responsibility frame would pull the argument outward towards water scarcity as a societal challenge, which is true and is a different essay.
Stakeholder theory, because the issue lives where value is created. Naming the choice shows the frameworks are being selected rather than recited, and keeps every following sentence inside one lane.
Sia tip — Write the framework-selection sentence before the paragraph, not after it. If you cannot say in one clause why this issue suits this framework, the paragraph will drift between the two and lose the logic mark.
Glossary

Key terms

Deontological ethics
The branch of ethics in which what you owe other people is the thing that decides, so an action is judged by what it is in itself rather than by how it turns out. Responsibility is described in this subject as fundamentally duty-based, which is why profitability cannot serve as its justification.
Shareholder value theory
The position that responsibility activities are appropriate only where they maximise shareholder return on investment. Its stated weakness is that the obligations a firm carries towards everyone else are never properly weighed.
Corporate social performance
The position that business carries both economic and social responsibilities, watching for damage to reputation, on the understanding that a corporation needs the public to grant it standing.
Stakeholder engagement
Treating conflicting stakeholder interests as real and the power relation as something to be negotiated. Critical perspectives prefer it to stakeholder management, which treats stakeholders as something the firm handles in pursuit of its own objectives.
Financial materiality
The degree to which an issue affects the business. It is one half of the double materiality pair, and a framework choice that runs only this half produces reporting in which the organisation's own risks are measured and its effects on others are described.
Impact materiality
The degree to which the business affects society and the environment. It is the half of the materiality pair that a responsibility frame is built to address, and the half most often thin in corporate reporting.
FAQ

Competing Theories of Corporate Responsibility FAQ

What is the difference between stakeholder theory and corporate social responsibility?

They are described as conceptually distinct yet complementary. Stakeholder theory looks outward from inside the firm and asks how value is made through its dealings with staff, buyers, the businesses it purchases from and the places it operates in. Responsibility takes the view from society at large and focuses on obligations that reflect societal expectations beyond immediate operations.

They also differ on who benefits and on whether the obligation runs one way or reciprocally.

How do I choose between the two frameworks for an essay?

By the kind of issue. If the issue lives inside how the firm operates and inside the relationships it runs on, stakeholder theory fits. If it is a broader societal challenge or an institutional failure the firm responds to, the responsibility frame fits. The reading's own conclusion is that the choice should be context-sensitive and deliberate, and using both together is explicitly allowed where the issue has both characters.

Why does it matter that responsibility is called duty-based?

Because a duty-based justification does not depend on the consequences being favourable. An initiative that happens to be profitable is not disqualified, but profitability cannot be its justification. That is the cleanest statement of why the business case and the ethical case are different arguments rather than two ways of saying the same thing.

Are stakeholder engagement and stakeholder management the same thing?

No, and the distinction carries the critical reading. Management treats stakeholders as something the firm handles in pursuit of its own objectives. Engagement treats the conflicting interests as real and the power relation as negotiable. Using the words interchangeably collapses the distinction the critique is built on.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Reduce the four theories to two questions and hold them in that form: who is the responsibility owed to, and what justifies it. With those two axes you can place any corporate justification you read in a sentence, which is worth more than being able to recite four descriptions.

Treat the twelve expectations as a coverage instrument rather than a list to memorise, and decide in advance what counts as covered, since a policy statement, a target, a reported value and an independently verified value are four different levels and treating them as equivalent makes every large company look complete.

Start your coverage check with lobbying disclosure and cost externalisation, because those two are most often absent and therefore fastest to an original finding. For framework selection, practise the concession sentence that names what the other framework would have been better at; it is short, it is honest, and it reliably reads as control rather than as hedging.
