APS111H1 Chap.7 Design Selection and Recommendation
Design Selection and Recommendation
Design Selection and Recommendation in practice
Selection converts criteria and evidence into a comparison that anyone on the team can inspect. A good selection method lays trade-offs, sensitivity and thin information out in the open instead of manufacturing a certainty the ratings cannot carry. Each criterion has to stay separate from the others, and every weight or rating needs a stated reason.
In engineering terms, the recommendation that follows is an argument naming the preferred concept, the evidence that decides it, its limitations and the verification still outstanding.
Decision focus: Selection method
The chapter case sets two concepts against each other, and their performance diverges on accessibility, durability, environmental impact and ease of operation.
Before choosing any selection method, write the decision itself in one line so the method has a clear target. Supplied performance facts about each concept belong in one column, and the criterion-based interpretation of those facts belongs in another.
Connect Criterion to the evidence
Pitch the definition of selection method at the scale of the two-concept case rather than in general terms.
Criterion then does the analytical work of turning each performance claim into a comparable judgement.
Recommendation enters last as a challenger: name the evidence that would count against the favoured concept instead of treating the first ranking as settled.
Boundary for Recommendation
Weak evidence, criteria counted twice and weights chosen without support all remain visible however neatly a decision table is organised.
Once the recommendation reaches that limit, the claim should shrink to the narrower result the selection method can still defend, together with a note of what would reopen the choice.
Revision task
Draft a compact selection table for the accessibility, durability, environmental impact and ease of operation comparison.
Audit the draft for duplicated criteria, weights with no justification and ratings with no evidence behind them. Finish the revision with a single sensitivity check, and redraft the conclusion whenever the favoured concept turns out to be fragile.
Failure pattern in Design Selection and Recommendation
Set any weak selection against the following sound sequence.
Screening against constraints comes first and removes every concept that cannot be admitted. Surviving concepts are then rated against objectives that do not overlap, with each metric backed by evidence of a suitable kind. A careful team next checks whether nudging a weakly supported rating would flip the ranking.
The resulting recommendation spells out the trade-off that decides the matter, admits which criterion is uncertain and proposes one focused test before the team commits.
Evidence-led closing move
Before the project moves to another design stage, check that what the selection method actually showed still matches what the recommendation claims.
Any gap between the two should be closed by narrowing the claim rather than by stretching the evidence.
Transfer beyond the first case
The same discipline carries over when a different pair of concepts or a different set of criteria is on the table. Whatever the options, keep the criteria independent, give each weight a reason and let sensitivity show where the comparison is fragile.
Carried to a new case, the recommendation still has to name its preferred option, the deciding evidence, the limits and the checks left to do.
Chapter vocabulary in use
Selection method: the written procedure a team follows to compare admissible alternatives against criteria it has stated. Criterion: any function, objective or constraint against which a design alternative is judged.
Recommendation: a qualified argument, grounded in evidence and criteria, for the course of action the engineers prefer.

Design Selection and Recommendation FAQ
How does selection method change the design decision?
Selection method changes the decision by fixing the order in which evidence is allowed to count. Constraints act first as a pass or fail screen, so a concept that cannot be admitted never reaches the scoring stage.
Only after screening are the remaining concepts compared on distinct objectives, and a small shift in the least certain rating shows whether the preferred concept holds or whether a feasible, focused test is needed before commitment.
Exam move
Rehearse Selection method
From memory, sketch a short selection table for two concepts and then hunt through it for criteria that overlap, weights that lack a reason and ratings that lack evidence.
Vary one rating to test sensitivity, and redraft the conclusion if the favoured concept does not survive the change.
Review Design Selection and Recommendation
Hold the finished table against the chapter limit on decision tables, which cannot conceal weak evidence, double-counted criteria or an unsupported weighting choice. Note the first move that failed and the evidence that revealed the failure.
