INF2144H Chap.8 Digital Audio Platforms
Digital Audio Platforms
Follow the recording across routes
Digital audio analysis joins encoding, hosting, discovery, monetization and listening practice. Hold one recording constant and compare how it moves through direct-support pages, streaming catalogues or syndicated feeds.
The changed relation becomes visible when the audio object remains stable.
Define control precisely
Creator control may concern pricing, presentation, audience data, portability, removal or governance. A service can expand one dimension while limiting another.
Compare the same dimension across routes and identify the infrastructure or intermediary that sets the relevant condition.
Explain intimacy as mediated practice
Voice, seriality, direct address, headphones and repeated listening can invite closeness, while subscription and platform delivery sustain the relation. Technical delivery participates without determining intimacy.
Connect formal choices, listening context and economic arrangement before interpreting the social bond.
Start with the audio object
Record whether the creator uploads a file, supplies a feed or delivers through an intermediary. Note the encoding, metadata and updates that travel. The same recording may enter different catalogue and subscription relations without changing its audible content.
This controlled comparison isolates distribution and governance rather than confusing them with genre or production quality.
Map discovery separately from delivery
A service can deliver audio reliably while offering limited discovery, or control a major recommendation surface while relying on external hosting.
Identify search, tags, playlists, charts, directories, cross-promotion and subscriptions as separate paths. Then ask who can influence each path and which audience traces remain visible to the creator.
Discovery is a governed relation, not a neutral result of availability.
Compare revenue through the work required
Direct purchase, pooled remuneration, advertising, memberships and sponsorships require different activities. Trace money alongside the creative, relational and administrative work needed to receive it. A route that appears direct may still depend on payment, hosting and audience platforms.
State the deduction, rule or dependency relevant to the comparison rather than assuming that one label guarantees independence.
Investigate portability
Ask whether recordings, metadata, subscriber relationships, purchase histories and performance information can move to another service. Portability affects creator control and audience continuity.
A compatible file is not enough if discovery, reputation or subscriber contact remains locked to a platform. Record both technical export and practical ability to rebuild the relationship.
Close on the audience relation
Finish by naming how the distribution route organizes contact among creator, recording and listener. It may foreground purchase, playlist discovery, serial subscription or community interaction.
Then identify the technical and institutional conditions supporting that relation and one alternative that tests it. The conclusion explains platform difference without treating sound as detached from its delivery and listening context.

Key terms
- Syndication Feed
- A Syndication Feed distributes structured updates from a publisher to multiple compatible clients or directories.
- Discovery System
- A Discovery System organizes how audiences encounter items through search, editorial paths, charts or recommendation.
- Listening Relation
- A Listening Relation is the situated connection among audio form, delivery, routine and audience interpretation.
Digital Audio Platforms FAQ
What makes an audio platform an alternative?
Specify the dimension of difference, such as governance, revenue, creator data, catalogue, portability or audience relation. A service may differ meaningfully while still depending on shared payment or hosting infrastructures. Compare the same creator objective across routes and include the work and switching cost required by each arrangement. Name the audience relation produced by the route.
Assessment move
Use one recording as a control, map its delivery and discovery on two platforms, and compare money, metadata, audience contact and exit conditions. Build an audio route table with upload or feed, hosting, catalogue entry, discovery path, playback client, payment and audience contact in order. Record the controlling actor and data moving at each stage.
The same company may occupy several stages, while a feed arrangement may distribute control across services. Choose one creator objective, such as durable audience contact or control over presentation, and compare routes against it. Include the creative, relational and administrative work each route requires.
A smaller service may support direct relationships but offer limited discovery; a large catalogue may expand reach while restrict data or portability. Treat intimacy separately from delivery by identifying voice, address, seriality and listening routine. Then explain how subscription or platform tools sustain the relationship. Finish by naming the platform relation that changes and the actor for whom it matters.
Avoid ranking services abstractly. A strong conclusion states the trade-off, underlying infrastructure and evidence that would show the balance has changed.
