Platform Studies and Infrastructure

Read above and below the interface

Platform analysis examines the rules and resources that coordinate participants and complements. Infrastructure analysis examines shared, embedded systems such as networks, standards, hosting, mapping, identity and payments.

The same service can appear as a platform to one actor and as an infrastructure to another, so every claim needs an actor, scale and function.

Use dependencies as evidence

List the services required for a visible interaction, then identify who maintains them, who can change access or price, and which alternatives exist. A dependency map organizes research but does not prove power on its own.

Pair each edge with documentation, policy, contracts, observed failure or participant accounts.

Analyse breakdown carefully

Outages and disputes reveal hidden support, but exceptional events do not automatically describe routine control. Record what failed, whose work became visible, which workaround appeared and how the system returned to ordinary operation.

The strongest conclusion names a specific dependence and the practical consequence of changing it.

Choose the focal actor

A mapping service may be an infrastructure for a municipal application and a platform for developers who build complementary products through its interfaces. A payment system may support many platforms while also governing its own ecosystem of merchants and users.

Begin by naming whose activity is being explained. Then specify whether the relevant function is shared support, ecosystem coordination, rule-setting or maintenance. This relational definition prevents classification from becoming a debate over labels.

Make governance visible

For every resource, ask who can admit participants, change technical access, set prices, rank complements or resolve disputes.

Formal ownership is relevant but not sufficient. A public organization may own a service while depending on private identity or cloud systems; a commercial platform may rely on open standards it cannot unilaterally change.

Map decision rights beside technical dependencies so that control is not inferred merely from architectural centrality.

Study maintenance as continuing work

Infrastructure persists through monitoring, repair, updates, documentation and coordination. These activities often disappear from accounts that emphasize innovation.

Identify who performs them, how failures are reported and which users must adapt during change.

Maintenance evidence can reveal power because the actor able to define normal operation often determines which failures count, which repairs receive priority and whose workaround becomes permanent.

Test portability and exit

A dependency matters when replacement requires rebuilding data, skills, integrations, contracts or relationships.

Record what can be exported, which standards support movement and which histories or reputations remain locked to the service. A nominal alternative may be unusable if it lacks compatible complements or if switching imposes a long interruption. This test converts a general claim about dependence into observable costs borne by particular actors.

Write the paired conclusion

Finish with two linked sentences.

The platform sentence names the participant relation and rule being coordinated. The infrastructure sentence names the shared support and maintenance burden that makes coordination possible. Then add the condition that could weaken the relation, such as interoperability, a new public service or collective participant action. The paired close shows power without treating the visible platform as self-sufficient.

Classify one service from two positions

Q [8 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. A city service exposes tools to developers while depending on commercial mapping and identity systems. Explain the platform and infrastructure readings. The weighting is a study aid, not a University marking scheme.

Relational boundary. The focal service inherits constraints from infrastructure while setting rules for complements.
  • 2Name the focal actors and scales.
  • 4Map rules, dependencies and switching costs.
  • 2State the boundary and qualification.
The municipal service is platform-like where it governs complements and infrastructurally dependent where shared mapping, hosting and identity services constrain its operation. The conclusion ties each label to actor, scale and function.
Sia tip — Do not write platform or infrastructure without naming the actor who experiences that relation.
Glossary

Key terms

Platform Boundary
A Platform Boundary identifies the participants, resources and rules treated as part of a coordinated ecosystem.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure is a shared and embedded support system used across multiple activities or organizations.
Interoperability
Interoperability is the capacity of systems to exchange or use information through compatible standards and interfaces.
FAQ

Platform Studies and Infrastructure FAQ

When can the same system be both platform and infrastructure?

It can coordinate an ecosystem for complementors while operating as an embedded dependency for another organization. State the actor, scale and function for each reading instead of searching for one permanent label. Add evidence about rule-setting, maintenance and switching cost so the labels explain a relation rather than merely redescribe the architecture. Test the classification again after a failure or provider change.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Draw the visible service, its complements and its underlying dependencies, then attach one source and one rule-making question to every connection. For every external resource, record provider, access condition, replaceability, maintenance responsibility and evidence. Do not treat all dependencies as equal: a widely implemented standard differs from a proprietary service whose records and interfaces cannot travel.

Rank the connections only after defining the actor whose options are being evaluated. Select one consequential link and trace an ordinary interaction, a change or failure, the response available to participants and the distribution of repair work. Compare the formal rule with actual practice and note the unavailable alternative as well as the chosen classification.

This turns a dependency diagram into an argument because it identifies the channel through which a platform or infrastructure change reaches participants. On review, write paired conclusions. The platform sentence names the participant relation and rule being coordinated; the infrastructure sentence names the shared support and maintenance burden that makes the coordination possible.

Add one condition that could weaken the relation, such as interoperability, a public substitute or collective participant action. If you cannot state that condition, the claim about dependence is probably too broad or insufficiently evidenced.
