Three critiques of the same instrument
The second half of the second lecture turns from how research is done to what it can know, and treats the question as a practical skill. It takes a questionnaire the lecture has just built, on teachers' beliefs about curricular aims, and asks whether there is anything wrong with the design.
The answer arrives at three levels, and each attacks a different part of the same instrument. Axiology concerns the values and world view of the researcher and asks which problem was worth investigating at all. Ontology concerns the nature of the reality being studied and asks whether the categories carve it correctly.
Epistemology concerns how that reality can be known and asks whether the meaning of a construct is stable across people.
Axiology is the level students skip
The lecture is blunt about it: what a researcher values and believes shapes, at the root, which problem gets chosen, and choosing is a subjective act.
It demonstrates the point by putting two hypotheses about the same construct side by side, one about whether a curricular orientation predicts direct teaching and one about whether a different orientation predicts students' concern with social justice. Both are answerable by evidence. Which one to ask is not, and a proposal that presents its topic as given has concealed its most contestable move.

Ontology and epistemology, worked on real items
The ontological questions asked of the instrument are whether the aims of education really fall into the five categories the items assume, whether another categorisation is possible, and whether the categories exclude one another.
The epistemological questions are different and easily confused with them: whether one construct can be interpreted in several ways, whether a single statement can correspond to more than one construct, and whether participants reading the same statement interpret it the same way. The first set is about the world.
The second is about the link between the world and the mark on the page, and it is the one that decides whether averaging responses produces a number with a single meaning.
A dimension, not two teams
The framework the lecture borrows lays out four levels at once.
Ontology runs from nominalism to realism, epistemology from anti-positivism to positivism, human nature from voluntarism to determinism, and methodology from idiographic to nomothetic.
Positivism is characterised as mimicking natural science through objective observation and measurement, single and stable meanings of constructs, external causes and generalised laws.
Anti-positivism holds that all research is subjective, that meanings are multiple and fluid, that action is caused by interaction between external factors and internal interpretation, and that generated theory changes with context and time.
A study can take an objectivist position on one row and still need an idiographic method because its case is unique.
What is incoherent is claiming that meaning is fluid and personal and then averaging it across two hundred respondents.
Why epistemology is on this syllabus
The published outline asks what a theory of knowledge does for our understanding of the part research plays in educational problems, and the assigned readings answer from the side of education.
Schooling, they argue, is one of the great social settings where knowledge is central, a place where claims to know are advanced, taken apart, judged and handed on.
Two candidate aims are set out, truth and rationality, and the reading holds that neither is enough on its own: a pupil who believes something true with no reasons behind it has been badly served, and so has a pupil who reasons well toward something false.
The sharpest illustration is the debate about testimony, since classrooms run on it. If a hearer cannot acquire sufficient justification from testimony alone, it becomes unclear how learning proceeds from what a teacher asserts, which lands directly on what a teacher is an epistemic authority about.

Do I really need a paradigm section in my proposal?
You need the consequences of one, which is not the same as a paragraph reciting labels. What a marker checks is whether the analysis plan matches the stated position, and mismatches are easy to see: a proposal that declares meaning to be personal and fluid and then counts code frequencies across two schools has contradicted itself.
The cheapest way to pass that check is to write the position after the design is settled and describe what you actually intend to do.
What is the practical difference between the ontological and epistemological critiques?
Ontology asks whether your categories are real; epistemology asks whether your route of access can deliver knowledge of them. A reviewer saying that teachers cannot report their own motivation accurately is making an epistemological objection, because the complaint is about self-report as a route rather than about whether motivation exists.
Answering an epistemological objection with an ontological defence, or the reverse, is the commonest way this part of a viva goes wrong.
Why does the course care about testimony?
Because a classroom runs on it. Teachers assert what they intend students to learn and expect acceptance of statements they do not support with evidence, and if justification cannot come from testimony alone it becomes unclear how learning from teaching proceeds at all, most sharply for very young students.
The debate therefore turns into a practical question about what a teacher is an epistemic authority on, and where teaching shades into indoctrination, which is a researchable topic rather than an abstract one.
