Using AI Tutor effectively

The AI Tutor is the most powerful thing inside AskSia, and also the easiest to use wrong. A lot of students treat it like a shortcut — paste the problem, copy the answer, move on. That's not what we built it for, and honestly, it's not what serves you. We built it because we believe AI can genuinely help students learn better. Here's how to actually do that.

Don't ask it to solve. Ask it to teach.

The single most important shift. Compare these two prompts:

• ❌ "Solve this integral for me."
• ✅ "Walk me through how to set up this integral. Stop before you compute it. I'll try the computation."

The first gets you an answer you can't reproduce on the exam. The second gets you a method you'll still have in three weeks.

Ask for the simplest version first

Whatever topic you're confused about, start with: "Give me the simplest version of this concept. Skip the formality. Skip the edge cases. What is it actually about?"

The tutor is good at one-paragraph explanations. Get the intuition first, then layer the rigor on top. Reading a textbook works the other way — formality first, intuition later, if at all. The tutor lets you flip it.

Use page-cited mode

In any course where you've uploaded lectures or readings, toggle on page-cited mode. The tutor's answers will be grounded in your real material with explicit page or slide citations. You can click any citation and jump straight to the source.

This matters for two reasons: you can verify the tutor isn't making things up, and you can study from the original source the moment the explanation lands.

The three prompts that change everything

1. "Quiz me on this until I get five in a row right."
2. "Explain this like I'm a first-year, not a senior."
3. "What's the question my professor is most likely to ask about this on the exam?"
