Math, linear relationship
A cycling club charges every member a one-time joining fee, then a fixed amount for each ride the member takes. A member who has taken 6 rides has paid $102 in total. A member who has taken 14 rides has paid $166 in total.
What is the one-time joining fee, in dollars?

1Find the rate
The cost per ride is the change in total cost over the change in rides: ($166 − $102) / (14 − 6) = $64 / 8 = $8 per ride.
Where the point goes. The rate is a difference divided by a difference. Dividing one member’s total by that member’s rides gives $102 / 6 = $17, which is the average cost per ride including the joining fee, not the per-ride charge.
2Back out the fee
Write the total as C = f + 8r. Substituting the first member: 102 = f + 8(6) = f + 48, so f = 54. The joining fee is $54.
Where the point goes. The question asks for the fee, not the rate. $8 is a real number you just computed correctly, and on a multiple-choice screen it will be sitting there as an option. Re-read the last line before you select.
3Check against the other point
54 + 8(14) = 54 + 112 = 166, which matches the second member exactly.
Where the point goes. You were given two data points and only used one to solve. Substituting into the unused one is a five-second check that catches a sign slip, and there is no partial credit on this test to fall back on.
