1Find the change
46 − 40 = 6 students. That difference, not 46, is what the percentage is about.
Where the point goes. The numerator of a percent increase is the amount it went up by. Putting 46 on top computes how big this year is compared with last year, which the test also offers as an answer.
2Divide by the original
6 / 40 = 0.15.
Where the point goes. The denominator is always the earlier value, the one the change is measured from. Dividing by 46 gives about 13%, which is close enough to the right answer to look convincing.
3Convert to a percentage
0.15 = 15%. The number of students who joined increased by 15%.
Where the point goes. 115% is arithmetically correct for a different question, the size of this year’s group as a share of last year’s. The word “increase” is what separates 15% from 115%, and it is the whole question.
