Returning a pointer to a local variable

The memory is reclaimed when the function returns, so the pointer is valid for exactly as long as it takes to fail confusingly later. The tutor asks where the storage lives.

Forgetting the null terminator

String functions read until they find a zero byte, so a buffer sized to the visible characters overflows by one every time. The tutor asks how many bytes the string actually needs.

Reading declarations left to right

C declarations read outward from the identifier, so a pointer to an array and an array of pointers look almost identical. The tutor asks you to read it the correct way round.

Why C is a memory subject

A C compiler will accept a great deal that cannot possibly work at runtime, so the language rewards a mental picture of memory more than it rewards syntax knowledge. The tutor asks you to draw what is in memory before it discusses any line of code.
