What is the AskSia AI Python tutor?

The AskSia AI Python tutor is a personal tutoring tool that teaches you to diagnose your own code rather than returning a corrected file. It opens with a hint about which line the traceback is actually pointing at, walks the execution with you when you ask, closes with a question about what would happen if one line changed, and builds quizzes weighted toward the concepts you keep tripping on. You can paste code, paste a traceback, photograph a lab sheet, or upload a notebook or an assignment from your LMS. It covers types and mutability, data structures, functions and scope, classes, exceptions, files, and the numpy and pandas basics most courses reach by mid semester, and answers in eight languages. The bottom line names the error and the line above it names your file. The tutor asks you to read it bottom up first, which usually locates the bug before any code changes.

Mutable default arguments

A list in a function signature is created once and shared by every call, which produces a bug that looks random. The tutor asks what the default holds on the second call rather than silently rewriting it.

Copying a reference and calling it a copy

Assigning a list to a new name gives you two names for one list. The tutor makes you predict the value before it runs the line, which is what turns aliasing from a mystery into a rule.

Why a corrected file teaches nothing

Paste a broken function into a general assistant and you get a working one back, along with no idea what was wrong. The next bug is identical and just as opaque. The tutor leads with a question about what you expected to happen, because the gap between expectation and behaviour is where every bug lives.

Personal here means it remembers which concept keeps producing your bugs. If your loops are fine but mutability keeps catching you, those are tracked separately, and practice days later returns on the second one. Can it explain an error message I do not understand?

Yes, and this is the most common use. Paste the traceback and it tells you which line is yours, which line is library code, and what the error name means in the context of your own variables rather than in the abstract.

Does it respect my assignment's restrictions?

It does once the brief is connected. Many courses ban specific libraries or require a particular structure. AskSia reads the constraints from your uploaded brief rather than offering the shortest solution available.

Can I upload a Jupyter notebook or a photo of a lab sheet?

Yes. Notebooks, .py files, PDFs, screenshots and photographs of printed lab sheets all work, and handwriting is read as written.

Does it cover pandas and NumPy?

It covers the array and dataframe basics that most introductory courses reach. For heavier analysis work there are dedicated data science and machine learning tutors.

Is using an AI Python tutor allowed?
