Integrating factors on a separable equation and separation on a linear one both waste the question. The tutor asks for the classification in words before any method is named.

When the forcing term already solves the homogeneous equation, the trial form must be multiplied by t. The tutor asks you to compare the forcing term to the complementary solution first.

Applying initial conditions to the wrong expression

Conditions belong to the general solution including the particular part, not to the complementary solution alone. The tutor asks which expression you are substituting into.

Why the method is the question

A differential equations exam is a sequence of classification decisions with routine algebra attached. Students who lose marks almost never lose them in the algebra. The tutor hints at the classification and refuses to name a method until you have stated the order, the linearity and the coefficient type.

Personal here means it remembers which classification keeps failing. If your first order work is clean but the resonance case in undetermined coefficients keeps being missed, that is tracked on its own and practice returns to it under time pressure.
