CHIN2600 Chap.4 Unpacking Social Interaction
Unpacking Social Interaction
The middle step of the course procedure is not one question but six, and they are genuinely different.
Running all six is what stops an analysis in which everything in the data turns out to be a stance.
A form can be taking a position, performing an act, invoking a recognisable way of speaking, opening a recognisable kind of episode, belonging to a recognisable kind of text, or rearranging who counts as a participant.
These are not alternatives: a single turn routinely occupies several at once, so the list is a checklist and the slots you check and reject belong in your write up as evidence that you looked.
Sequence is where the evidence is kept. A first part makes a particular second part relevant, and the absences are as informative as the replies.
The three move instructional pattern marks an exchange as teaching by evaluating the response rather than merely receiving it. Format tying builds a turn out of the shape of the previous one, which can align two speakers or hold one of them to a frame they would rather escape.
The chapter then works the course's flagship Chinese form.
A sentence final particle sits outside the canonical structure of the sentence, adds meaning on top of what the words and structure carry, and leaves a grammatical sentence when removed, which hands you a ready made minimal pair and a comparison English cannot match.
What this chapter covers
- 01
4.1 Six slots, and what each one asks of your data
- 02
4.2 Paired turns, and why a gap is data rather than missing data
- 03
4.3 The three move instructional sequence, in classrooms and in families
- 04
4.4 Format tying as alignment and as constraint
- 05
4.5 The particle outside the sentence, and the minimal pair it creates
- 06
4.6 Six jobs these particles are taught as doing
- 07
4.7 Two instruments for when nobody will let you record them
Turning a five scenario survey into one defensible finding
- +2Do not lead with counts. Twelve people is not a sample and a percentage from it invites a question you cannot answer.
- +3Lead with the reasons. They are qualitative data of exactly the kind the third step of the course procedure needs, and they were offered unprompted.
- +3Code the reasons for what respondents say the form does. Less harsh, friendlier, less certain are three different pragmatic readings of one form, and the split between them is your finding.
- +2Report the frequency grid as direction, not number, and look for the mismatch: anyone who claimed never to use a form they had just judged confidently.
Key terms
- Adjacency pair
- A two part sequence in which the first part makes a specific second part conditionally relevant, so that a missing, delayed or misshapen second part is itself treated as meaningful by the participants.
- Format tying
- Building a turn out of the lexical, syntactic or prosodic shape of the prior turn, so the tie between them is visible. It can align two speakers or hold one to a frame they would rather leave.
- Sentence final particle
- A form attached at the end of a sentence or phrase that adds meaning over and above what the words and the structure already carry. It sits outside the canonical sentence structure and plays no part in building the clause.
- Participation framework
- The configuration of speaker, addressee and overhearer roles in play at a given moment, visible in address forms, pronoun shifts and who the body is turned toward.
- Metapragmatic talk
- Talk about talk: participants commenting on, evaluating or categorising a way of speaking. It is the strongest available evidence for the social meaning step because the categories come from the community.
Unpacking Social Interaction FAQ
How do I decide which of the six slots my project belongs to?
Most projects anchor in one and borrow from a second. Disagreement lives in stances and borrows from acts; shop signs live in genres and borrow from registers; a classroom lives in activities and borrows from participation frameworks. Naming the anchor early stops the analysis drifting.
Is it a problem that the printed list varies between slides?
Only if you cite it as a closed set. Some slide variants include the register slot and some do not, and the order of two items moves, so describe it as the analytic categories the course works with and you will not be caught out in the question session.
Why can I not just use a table of what each particle means?
Reference tables are built largely from written material and pair each form with a single primary function, while the same form does different work in a question, in a list and after a disagreement. Build the claim from positions in your own recording and use the table only as a check.
I cannot record anyone. Is my project dead?
No. An awareness and use survey with scenarios and compulsory reasons produces analysable material in a week, and collected talk about talk gives you the community's own categories. Neither reaches actual frequency of use, and saying so is part of the method rather than an apology.
Assessment move
Take one two minute stretch of any Chinese language video with visible comments and run all six slots over a single turn, writing one sentence for each slot including the ones you reject. The exercise takes fifteen minutes and it is the fastest way to stop reaching for stance every time.
Then do the same turn again a day later without looking at the first attempt and compare: the slots you filled the same way twice are the ones your evidence actually supports.
