The format is blended: online material carries the concepts, and a two-hour workshop each week turns one of them into something you hand in.
The course has no written test of any kind.
Every mark comes from an artefact you design, run, write or say: five short weekly applied tasks chosen from seven on offer, an individual reflective workbook, a group research report on a live environmental problem, a peer assessment of your contribution, and a strict three-minute pitch to a non-specialist audience.
That structure is why this guide is organised as a method bench rather than a revision sequence.
The methods themselves span the full mixed-methods range the discipline uses. On the quantitative side: questionnaire construction across the four question families, wording faults and their repairs, response scales and anchor sets, coding and data preparation.
On the qualitative side: interview schedules and guides, question and prompt types, focus group composition and facilitation. Alongside them sit participatory and critical approaches built on relationships, responsibility, reciprocity and redistribution, standardised ecological survey and rapid site assessment, and program logic for monitoring and evaluation.
Research ethics, project management and communication run underneath all of it, because in applied work they decide what is feasible before they decide what is permissible.
The group project is the spine.
Groups of five from the same workshop cohort pick from fifteen contemporary topics, or propose their own, and carry one question from framing through design and ethics to recommendations for environmental management, planning, policy or practice.
The topics range across consumption and waste, urban nature, major events, housing, conservation choices, critical minerals, the energy transition, wellbeing, climate risk, transport, coasts, water security, trust and participation, and emerging risks at work.
Turning one broad topic into a question that forces its own method
- +2Find the tension in the topic paragraph. The guide says greenspace supports biodiversity, recreation and cooling, while growth and density pressure access, quality and distribution. The tension is nature for wildlife against nature for people.
- +2Name a population and a place. Regular users of one named park in a suburb where density has recently increased. A population you can actually reach is part of the design, not a compromise on it.
- +3Choose a manageable relationship. How users weigh biodiversity value against recreational use when the two conflict in a specific redesign choice. One relationship, not three.
- +2Write the question. How do regular users of this park weigh biodiversity value against recreational use when a redesign requires a trade-off between them?
- +3Check what it forces. Weighing under conflict is reasoning people do aloud, so the question forces a discussion method; the frequency and profile of use is countable, so it forces a short instrument as well. The combination is now justified by the question rather than chosen for variety.
Key terms
- Applied research
- Research designed to inform a management, planning, policy or practice decision. The purpose, not the technique, is what makes it applied, which is why a standard survey method can appear in both applied and basic work.
- Research aim
- One of the three to five smaller goals a broad research question is broken into. Aims are what you decide the data against: each aim should name the evidence that would satisfy it before any method is chosen.
- Attribute question
- A questionnaire item that establishes a characteristic of the respondent, such as household size, occupation or education level. Its typical failure is categories that overlap or do not cover the population.
- Double-barrelled question
- An item containing two propositions that share a single answer, so a respondent who agrees with one and not the other cannot reply honestly. The repair is always to split it into two items.
- Semi-structured interview
- An interview run from a guide rather than a fixed schedule: the territory is set in advance but wording and order can flex. It buys depth and the ability to follow the unexpected, at the cost of strict comparability between participants.
- Positionality
- The researcher's own location relative to the people and issue studied, and the effect that has on access, what participants say and how findings are read. A positionality statement earns its place only when it changes a design decision.
- Rapid site assessment
- A short structured field appraisal, usually one visit, that records defined attributes of a site so a judgement can be made quickly. It establishes presence and current condition; it cannot establish absence or a trend.
- Program logic
- A model chaining resources, activities and outputs to shifts at three horizons, so the route an initiative expects change to take is visible. It lays out that route and does not demonstrate it holds.
- Output
- The direct product or service an activity delivers, such as sessions held or participants reached. An output is a record of delivery rather than of effect, and collapsing that distinction is the error most often seen in student evaluations.
- Hurdle requirement
- A component you must pass to pass the course, independently of your total mark. In this course the reflective workbook carries that flag.

Is there a final written test in Applied Research Methods at UQ?
No. The assessment for Semester 2, 2026 is made up of five weekly applied tasks worth 25 per cent in total, a reflective workbook worth 20 per cent, a group research report worth 35 per cent, a peer assessment of contribution worth 5 per cent, and a three-minute pitch worth 15 per cent.
Every component is something you produce or present, which is why preparation here means building artefacts across the semester rather than revising at the end.
Which component is the hurdle?
The reflective workbook. It is the only component flagged that way in the course materials, and it is individual, so strong group work does not cover it. It also asks for something you cannot manufacture at the end: evidence that you gave constructive feedback on other students' draft work, such as completed peer review templates, annotated comments or feedback notes.
Pass conditions beyond that hurdle are set by the course profile, so confirm them there.
Do I have to submit all seven weekly assessments?
No. Seven are offered from Week 2 to Week 9 and you submit any five, each worth five marks, with the best five counting. If you submit more than five, the best five count unless the course site says otherwise for a particular task. Choose the five whose artefacts feed your group project, because the marks are the same either way and the overlap saves you a fortnight.
What are the seven weekly topics?
Questionnaires and survey instruments, interviews and focus groups, participatory research, research for monitoring and evaluation, ecological research methods, quantitative data analysis using statistical software, and qualitative data analysis using coding software. Each is a short individual task whose format varies by week: a brief written response, a plan, a draft research component, a table, a tool or a template.
How is the group project organised?
Groups of five students from the same workshop cohort work across the semester on a topic chosen from a guide of fifteen, or on a topic the group proposes and has approved.
The group produces one research brief or report covering the problem, question and aims, a literature-informed rationale, a justified design with ethics, sampling and limitations, findings, discussion and recommendations, and then pitches it in three minutes.
What counts as applied research in this course?
Research whose design is answerable to a decision. The group report brief asks the project to generate useful insight for a real-world environmental issue and to end in recommendations, implications or future directions for environmental management, planning, policy or practice. In practice that means feasibility and stated limits are marked as part of quality, not treated as caveats added at the end.
What do I have to do about ethics if I collect my own data?
Primary data collection is limited to Australia, and every participant must receive participant information and give consent before anything is collected. Face-to-face participants receive an information sheet and sign a consent form using the templates on the course site; online participants get a landing page carrying the same information and an explicit agreement step before the instrument opens.
Approval from your tutor or the coordinator comes before collection begins.
How to prepare for the assessments
Work the course as a portfolio rather than a sequence of separate tasks. Seven weekly assessments are offered and five count, so choose the five whose artefacts your group project actually needs: a group running an interview study gains far more from the interview, participatory and qualitative-analysis tasks than from a polished questionnaire it will never field.
Forty per cent of every weekly mark is applied research reasoning, so add one sentence to each artefact naming the alternative you rejected and why. Start the reflective workbook in the first workshop, not the last week, because it is the one component that asks for evidence you gave feedback to others and that evidence cannot be reconstructed from memory.
In the group project, map dependencies before building a calendar: the approval step before data collection has a queue in front of it, and the longest chain rather than the hardest task sets your real deadline.
