24761 Chap.4 Triangulating Marketing Evidence
Triangulating Marketing Evidence
Several views of one issue
Triangulation means investigating one marketing issue through more than one source, method, analyst or theory, so that the weakness of any single view does not decide the conclusion.
The Week 3 lecture presents it as a way to make findings more credible and to reduce the risk of a false reading.
Four forms
Data triangulation compares sources, times or places; methodological triangulation combines methods, between or within families; investigator triangulation involves more than one researcher; and theoretical triangulation reads the evidence through more than one framework.
Each form protects against a different weakness, from an unrepresentative source to a single analyst’s blind spot, and reports can combine several of them.
Agreement and conflict
When sources agree, confidence rises. When they clash, the difference must be investigated by checking each source's context and limits.
The chapter works an invented case of a regional art museum whose ticketing data, visitor survey and city event listings seem to disagree about falling weekend visits. Two practice items close the chapter.

Worked example · free
Trace agreeing museum sources through the triangulation flow
- 1Gather: the bookings log records what schools actually did; the teacher survey records what they say they will do.
- 1Compare: both point to returning school groups, so at the decision point the answer is yes, they agree.
- 1Confidence rises, because the two sources use different methods: a behavioural record and a self-report.
- 1Check the limits before relying on it: the survey reached only teachers who visited, so add a source that covers schools that did not come, such as a short call-round.
Key terms
- Methodological Triangulation
- Combining more than one research method, such as interviews and a review analysis, so each method's weaknesses are offset.
- Investigator Triangulation
- Having two or more researchers collect or interpret the same data and compare what they conclude.
- Theoretical Triangulation
- Interpreting one set of data through several theories to see where they converge and where they part.
- Contradictory Evidence
- Sources that point to different conclusions about the same issue, which calls for an explanation of the gap.
Triangulating Marketing Evidence FAQ
What does triangulation mean in marketing research?
It is the practice of examining one issue through several sources of evidence or several approaches and comparing what they say. Because each source or method has its own blind spots, combining them reduces the skew any single one introduces and makes the resulting insight more credible to a manager who has to act on it.
What are the four types of triangulation?
Data triangulation uses different sources, times or locations. Methodological triangulation combines methods, either across families such as interviews plus review analysis or within one family. Investigator triangulation involves more than one researcher. Theoretical triangulation applies more than one theory to the same evidence to test which explanation holds up better.
What should I do when my sources disagree?
Treat the disagreement as information. Investigate why the sources differ by comparing who each one measured, when, where and for what purpose, and consider each source's limitations. Sometimes both are accurate, but about different groups. Report your explanation openly rather than dropping the source that does not fit, because the reasoning itself shows judgement.
Do three sources saying the same thing prove a finding?
Only if they are independent. Several articles repeating one company announcement are a single source counted three times, and they inherit its purpose. Agreement between sources built on different data or methods, such as sales figures and customer reviews, is far stronger than agreement between copies of the same origin.
How is triangulation assessed in the secondary data report?
The rubric gives triangulation and validation its own criterion, worth 4 of the 30 points, describing the use of multiple secondary sources and approaches to support the validity of the findings. Show it in the sentences that state your insights by naming the independent sources behind each one and explaining any disagreement between them.
Assessment move
Practise on a brand you are not assessed on. Pick one issue and list the sources that bear on it, marking which are truly independent and which share an origin. For each pair of independent sources, write one sentence on whether they agree and, if not, which difference in who, when, where or why they measured could explain it.
Then decide which extra form of triangulation would test that explanation: another source, another method, a second reader or a second theory. Turn the result into one sentence that names the sources and the agreement. When the routine is easy, apply it to the issue you name in your own report.
