Customer Data, Privacy and Direct to Consumer

Four data types

Zero-party data is shared on purpose, first-party data is collected directly, second-party data is another firm’s first-party data, and third-party data is aggregated by outsiders.

Module 7 ties trust to consent and to a fair exchange of value.

Selling direct

Direct-to-consumer brands gain margin, data and control, but carry high marketing, logistics and service costs and reach fewer buyers than retail.

Cool or creepy

In the module’s survey, birthday offers and recommendations matching past purchases were mostly seen as cool, while ads based on third-party tracking and location-based ads from unknown brands were seen as creepy.

Discounts and loyalty points were the most valued rewards for sharing data.

Sort four data sources for a sportswear brand

Q [4 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. A sportswear brand holds (a) answers to a fit quiz, (b) app browsing history, (c) a gym chain’s member insights shared under a partnership, and (d) a purchased audience segment. Name each data type and rank them by how directly the customer consented. The marks shown are an AskSia study allocation, not an official University marking scheme.

  • 1(a) zero-party: the customer shared it intentionally.
  • 1(b) first-party: observed directly through the brand’s own app.
  • 1(c) second-party: another firm’s first-party data, which lacks explicit consent for this brand.
  • 1(d) third-party: aggregated by outsiders; the ranking from most to least direct consent is a, b, c, d.
Quiz answers are zero-party, app history first-party, the gym’s insights second-party and the purchased segment third-party, in falling order of direct consent.
Sia tip — Ask who collected the data and whether the customer knowingly gave it; those two questions place almost any example correctly.

FAQ

Customer Data, Privacy and Direct to Consumer FAQ

What is the difference between zero-party and first-party data?

Zero-party data is what a customer deliberately volunteers, such as quiz answers or stated preferences. First-party data is collected by the company through its own channels, including behaviour like page visits and purchases that the customer did not consciously hand over.

Which personalised tactics do customers find creepy?

In the module’s study, 61% found ads based on third-party tracking cookies more creepy than cool, 64% disliked location-based ads from brands they did not recognise, and 56% disliked emails mentioning a place they had visited. Birthday offers and recommendations matching past purchases were mostly seen as cool.

Is direct to consumer always better for a brand?

No. It brings higher margins, direct data, control and speed, but the module lists high marketing costs, complex logistics, limited reach compared with retail and demanding customer service. Many direct brands therefore add their own stores and later selected retail partners.

What are the five steps of a first-party data strategy?

Define a goal for the data, build a collection and storage strategy, decide which types of first-party data to collect, make sure the data is meaningful, and ensure an exchange of value with customers. Collection should be transparent and purposeful, with policies that explain why data is gathered.

What is the difference between a CDP and a DMP?

The module says a customer data platform is mainly used for first-party data, building unified customer profiles, while a data management platform handles third-party and external data sources, organising them into audience segments for advertising and personalisation.

What is geofencing and how do retailers use it?

Technology that watches a device’s location, through GPS, RFID, Wi-Fi or mobile signals, and fires a preset action once the device crosses a virtual boundary, such as a store sending an app notification about a sale. It also reveals foot traffic, peak visiting times and the effect of outdoor advertising.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Make a four-row table of the data types with a definition, a consent note and an example from your own life. Then design one value exchange for your persona that uses zero-party data, offers something customers value and avoids a tactic the survey found creepy. Write the value your persona receives for every piece of data your prototype asks them to share.

Read the privacy policy of one brand you use and note whether it explains why each kind of data is collected, which is what the module asks for.
