Omnichannel Communication Strategies

IMC and OMS

Integrated marketing communication is campaign-oriented and keeps the message consistent; omnichannel marketing strategy is customer-oriented and designs how people move across touchpoints.

Module 6 treats them as partners and revises the communication process from sender to feedback.

The channel menu

Shoppable media shortens the path to purchase, social commerce keeps checkout inside the platform, retail media reaches shoppers near the point of purchase, and digital out of home adds targeting and interactivity.

Principles for talking to customers

Know the audience, tailor the message, reach people where they are active, keep messaging consistent, listen and engage in two-way conversation, and stay transparent and authentic.

Where it shows up in assessment

Case 3 asks for brand community and direct versus indirect channels, and the prototype marks the channels you choose and their link to the persona.

Trace a station screen campaign through the communication process

Q [4 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. A sunscreen brand runs a digital screen at a train station showing the day’s UV index with a QR code to a discount. Map the campaign onto the six elements of the communication process the module revises. The marks shown are an AskSia study allocation, not an official University marking scheme.

  • 1Sender: the sunscreen brand. Encoding: the UV reading and offer turned into a short visual message.
  • 1Channel or medium: the digital out-of-home screen at the station.
  • 1Decoding: commuters read the UV level and the offer; receiver: the commuter who notices it.
  • 1Feedback: QR scans and redemptions show the brand whether the message landed, closing the loop.
Brand as sender, the visual UV message as encoding, the station screen as channel, commuters decoding and receiving it, and QR scans as feedback.
Sia tip — Name a measurable feedback route for every channel you recommend; without one, the sender cannot tell whether the message was decoded as intended.

FAQ

Omnichannel Communication Strategies FAQ

What is the difference between IMC and OMS?

IMC is campaign-oriented: it focuses on the message and creativity of a campaign across channels. OMS is customer-oriented: it designs the channels, brand touchpoints and the way customers navigate between them. The module says each strengthens the other when aligned.

Why are retail media networks growing?

They let brands advertise to shoppers at or near the point of purchase on a retailer’s own channels, using the retailer’s shopper data. The module says they respect privacy better because they rely on first-party data, and that return on spend is easier to trace.

How does digital out of home connect to online channels?

Digital screens can change content in real time and target by location, time or weather, and QR codes or NFC tags on them let viewers move straight into a digital channel for information or purchase. That bridge between offline and online is what makes DOOH part of an omnichannel plan.

What is shoppable media?

Content that provides a pathway to purchase, such as an ad that opens a product card with price and stock and lets people check out inside the platform. The module expects it to become the fastest-growing advertising category, and says more shopping information and interactivity make buying more likely.

How is social commerce different from e-commerce?

E-commerce happens on a website, online store or branded app, where customers add items to a cart and check out. Social commerce lets customers browse and buy without leaving the social platform, often after seeing creator recommendations or a sponsored post.

What is the communication process the module revises?

Two active sides, a sender such as the company and a receiver such as the customer, and four components between them: encoding, the channel or medium, decoding and feedback, drawn from Adler and Towne. Sharing a common meaning between sender and receiver depends on every step working.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Draw the communication process and label where feedback reaches the sender in each channel you plan to use. Then build two campaigns with Channel Roulette groups and check each against the IMC question and the OMS question before you choose one. Check every channel in your plan for a feedback route, and replace any that cannot tell you whether the message worked.

Work out the order in which your persona will meet each channel, and make sure the first one sets up what the last one asks them to do.
