What this course asks you to be able to do

Information Management is taught by the Department of Information Systems in the College of Business at City University of Hong Kong, and the course states its own aim in one line: it is about how to manage information so that a company becomes more competitive, and about the systems, procedures and professions that make that possible.

The five weighted rows are the published ones and sum to one hundred: examination fifty, mid-term test twenty, group project fifteen, seminar participation ten, and the three interim group reports five between them. The sixth row carries no weight because it is a pass condition rather than a task: the course materials state that students must pass both the coursework and the examination. Two further details change how a semester is planned. The mid-term test has no make-up sitting, and where a missed sitting is approved its twenty per cent is counted through the examination instead, taking that paper from fifty to seventy per cent.

The teaching team also states how it will be tested. The examination focuses on applying concepts rather than reciting them, and the published revision advice is to take part in the tutorials, the group project and the lecture discussions rather than to reread slides.

Two halves that are marked separately

Half the grade is a closed book examination answered in long questions. The other half is coursework: a mid-term test worth twenty per cent, a group project worth fifteen, seminar participation worth ten and three interim group reports worth five between them.

The published pass condition is the detail most students read past. A student has to pass the coursework and the examination, so a strong project cannot rescue a failed paper and a strong paper cannot rescue neglected coursework. The mid-term test is multiple choice, closed book with a cheat sheet allowed, and covers everything up to and including week nine.

There is no make-up test; a student who misses it with an approved mitigation has the twenty per cent transferred to the examination, which then carries seventy per cent of the grade.

The project is the course taught a second time

The group project asks a team of about five to act as business consultants to a company of their choice that has at least one social media page.

The team analyses the industry structure, collects posts and comments from that page with FacePager, runs a text topic analysis in SAS Enterprise Miner, identifies problems and opportunities from the topics it finds, and proposes information management and information systems solutions for both the company's products and its business processes. That chain is not a side task.

It is the same reasoning the examination asks for on an unseen case, which is why the strategy, business intelligence and social media chapters here are written to serve both.

The three interim reports are feedback, not paperwork

Three short reports fall due in weeks four, seven and nine and carry one, two and two per cent. Each answers one challenge.

The first asks whether the company's current products and business processes create competitive advantage, using an industry structure analysis such as Porter's five forces. The second asks how the public, customers, prospective customers and stakeholders actually perceive the company, and what challenges and opportunities follow from the topics the text analysis surfaces.

The third asks how information management can tackle those challenges and exploit the opportunities.

The tutorial guidance is explicit that these reports become sections of the final report, so a team that writes them properly has already drafted most of its submission.

One instruction the materials give twice, differently

The peer evaluation form is described as optional in the project brief and on the course site, with equal contribution assumed if a team submits nothing, while the form itself warns that a project without a signed form may be treated as incomplete and score zero.

Both statements come from this offering's own materials. The safe course is to submit a form whenever contribution has been uneven, and to confirm the current instruction on the course site before the submission date.

Where marks are usually lost

Three habits account for most of the damage.

The first is treating an information system as software: the published component list contains people and procedures as well as hardware, software and data, so an answer that names technology alone is incomplete by definition.

The second is naming a technology instead of arguing a change: a proposal that says a company should adopt business intelligence, without saying which business process changes and what evidence justifies it, answers a different question from the one asked.

The third is reading a process diagram without following it: the course states that you must be able to read a simple business process diagram, so the examinable skill is tracing a path across lanes and saying which repository each data flow touches.

How to use this guide

Work one chapter at a time and finish each with something written.

The early chapters fix the vocabulary the whole course reuses, the middle chapters build the analysis chain the project needs, and the later chapters cover the technology topics the examination samples. Keep one company of your own beside the guide from the first week; every chapter has a place to apply it, and by the time the interim reports fall due the thinking is already done.

Turn a complaint pattern into a defensible recommendation

Q [10 marks]. AskSia authored practice. A Hong Kong bakery chain with one Facebook page finds that its three largest comment topics are queue length at two branches, inconsistent afternoon stock and confusion about a loyalty promotion. Working as the consultant the project brief describes, state the business process each topic points at, choose one information management solution, say which activity in that process changes, and name the evidence that would show the change worked. Queue length belongs to the in-store fulfilment process, afternoon stock to the replenishment process, and promotion confusion to the marketing communication process rather than to a marketing department. Choosing replenishment, the solution is a shared sales and stock repository fed by the point of sale so that afternoon reorder decisions read the same numbers the counter sees; the activity that changes is the manual end-of-morning stock call, which becomes an automatic reorder trigger with a manual override. The new data are hourly line-item sales and shrink, read by the shift supervisor and the central planner. The recommendation is falsified if afternoon stockouts do not fall while the repository is in use, which separates a real process fault from a demand forecast that was wrong in the first place.
Sia tip — Before proposing anything, write the sentence 'today this decision is made by ___ using ___'. If you cannot fill both blanks from the evidence you collected, you are recommending a technology rather than changing a process, and that is the answer the marker reads as thin.

How is this course assessed?

The published split is a fifty per cent examination and fifty per cent coursework. Inside the coursework half the mid-term test is twenty per cent, the group project fifteen, seminar participation ten and the three interim group reports five between them. The five weighted rows sum to one hundred.

The teaching materials also state a pass condition: students must pass both the coursework and the examination to pass the course, so the two halves are cleared separately.

Is the final examination open or closed book?

The course materials give the final examination format as long questions, closed book. The mid-term test is described separately as multiple choice, closed book, with a cheat sheet permitted. Those are two different statements about two different assessments, so do not carry the cheat sheet permission across to the examination. Confirm the permitted materials for your sitting on Canvas.

What does the mid-term test cover, and what happens if I miss it?

The scope is everything covered up to and including week nine, and the format is multiple choice and closed book with a cheat sheet. The materials state that no make-up sitting is provided. A student who misses it for a reason approved by the assessment panel has the twenty per cent counted through the examination instead, which then moves from fifty to seventy per cent of the grade.

What is the group project actually asking for?

A business consultation report and a recorded presentation about one company of the team's choice that has at least one social media page. The report is twelve per cent and the presentation three.

The report mark is divided into four equal three per cent parts: industry analysis with text topic analysis, problem and opportunity identification, innovation and feasibility of the proposed information management solutions, and the detail of the information systems and other technologies.

Which software do I have to use for the project?

The brief requires FacePager to collect posts from the company's social media page and SAS Enterprise Miner to run the text topic analysis, using the techniques from the first three modules of the social analytics and business intelligence material. Enterprise Miner runs in the tutorial labs, or off campus through the university virtual private network and virtual desktop service.

Plan around the session time limit and save your work before a session ends.

How does seminar participation turn into marks?

Participation carries ten per cent and splits into a lecture component worth up to two and a half per cent and a tutorial component worth seven and a half. The lecture component comes from in-class pop-up quizzes across weeks two to nine and eleven to twelve, of which five weeks are drawn at random.

The tutorial component is built mainly from team-based learning discussion, scored on logic and structure, depth and accuracy, and focus and synthesis.

How many pages can the final report be, and what happens if it is longer?

Fifteen pages, and the two published statements of that limit differ in what they exclude. The project brief excludes a one page executive summary, references and appendices. The report template excludes the title page, the executive summary, the references, the appendices and the table of contents, and adds that a report above the limit is subject to zero for the whole project.

Study strategy

How to study for the exam

Pick one company with an active social media page in week one and keep it beside the guide all semester. For each chapter, write the chapter's idea onto that company in three or four sentences: which process it touches, what data the process already produces, and what would have to change.

That habit produces the interim reports almost as a by-product and it rehearses exactly what the examination asks, which is application rather than recall. Two weeks before the mid-term test, work backwards through weeks one to nine turning every definition into a question that could be asked as multiple choice, because writing distractors teaches the boundaries faster than rereading does.

For the examination itself, practise long answers under time on unseen cases: read the case, name the process, name the information the decision needs, propose one change, and say what evidence would show whether it worked.
