Panopto is a lecture capture and video platform that colleges and universities use to record classes and share them with enrolled students. It was spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2007. Recordings come with automatic captions, a searchable transcript, slide-based chapters, playback speed control, private notes and bookmarks, and they usually open inside your LMS rather than on a separate site.
Panopto says more than 2,000 colleges and universities use its platform. Yes. Panopto connects to all four, so most students open recordings from a course site rather than from Panopto itself, and the Sync button appears in both places. AskSia also syncs the rest of your course from Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and Brightspace, so slides, readings and recordings end up in one library.
AskSia exports the study content, not the video. Syncing brings the lecture's captions, slide contents and timings into your AskSia library, and from there you can export summaries and transcripts as TXT, DOCX, SRT or Google Docs. Whether the video file itself can be downloaded is a Panopto setting that your lecturer or university controls, and AskSia does not bypass it.
Add your exam date and the time you can study each day. Sia looks at the lectures you have synced, puts the ones you missed first, schedules flashcards and quizzes block by block, and finishes with timed practice and a recap of the exam traps your lecturer flagged. If time is short it triages by emphasis, and if you have slack it adds spaced review. Lectures synced by the extension feed the plan, and you follow it in the AskSia web app or mobile app. You can also ask Sia questions directly on your LMS page.
Most Panopto recordings carry automatic captions, but they can take time to process and some lecturers switch them off. If a recording has none, you can play it in your browser and let AskSia Transcribe turn the tab audio into a transcript as it plays, then build the Sia Note from that.
Panopto is built for watching. You can search a recording, skip by slide, and keep private notes and bookmarks that you write yourself. Some universities also switch on Panopto's AI summaries, which give a short overview of one video. AskSia is built for revising: it ranks concepts by emphasis, pulls out the traps your lecturer flagged, generates flashcards and quizzes, answers questions across every lecture in the course, and turns the lot into a study plan.
No. The extension is read-only. It uses the browser session you are already logged into, reads only recordings you are permitted to view, and writes nothing back to Panopto or your LMS. AskSia never sees your university password.
Reviewing lecture recordings you already have access to, for your own study, is what they are published for. Two rules matter. Lecture recordings belong to your university and your lecturers, so keep synced material for personal study and do not share recordings, transcripts or notes publicly. And AI policies differ between institutions and courses, so follow your institution's academic integrity policy and check your unit outline if you are unsure.
Yes. The extension is free to install from the Chrome Web Store or Microsoft Edge Add-ons, and it also works in Brave and Arc. No credit card is needed, and the free AskSia plan covers syncing and asking questions about your synced lectures. Paid plans add higher limits and more export options.
