Ethical Theories as Competing Tests

Define deontology

The course material gives this chapter a concrete anchor: The curriculum gives separate treatment to three major ethical approaches. That deontology anchor controls how teleology is explained and how virtue ethics is tested in changed practice.

Ethical Theories as Competing Tests frames a decision through deontology, teleology and virtue ethics.

The objective is to test an action through duties, consequences and professional character, so the chapter should be read as a chain from problem definition to evidence, option comparison and accountable action.

Start with deontology and name the decision owner, affected stakeholders and time horizon.

The same deontology fact can matter differently across those positions, so the opening frame determines which evidence is relevant.

Trace teleology

Use teleology to explain how the present condition produces an opportunity, cost or risk. A strong teleology mechanism states what changes, for whom and through which organisational, market or institutional process.

Apply virtue ethics when comparing options.

Keep the virtue ethics criteria distinct, test trade-offs and ask which assumption drives the recommendation. A score or matrix helps only when its criteria are justified by the case.

For the application — test an action through duties, consequences and professional character — finish with an actor, action, rationale and review trigger.

This turns the virtue ethics analysis into a recommendation while keeping the decision open to new evidence.

Test with virtue ethics

Build a decision ledger. Separate the current condition, the stakeholder affected, the evidence supporting deontology, the mechanism represented by teleology and the criterion supplied by virtue ethics.

If a virtue ethics recommendation cannot point back to one of those entries, it is probably preference dressed as analysis rather than a consequence of the case.

Compare at least two feasible options against the same criteria. State who benefits under virtue ethics, who bears cost or risk, what capability implementation requires and what evidence would reveal failure.

This comparison is essential when students need to test an action through duties, consequences and professional character, because an attractive option is not defensible until its trade-offs are visible.

Rehearse the busi5161 deontology response as a short briefing: one sentence for the decision, two for the evidence and mechanism, one for the alternative and one for the qualified recommendation.

Then expand only the teleology move that needs more support. This protects the argument structure under a strict word or time limit.

Transfer to Ethical Theories as Competing Tests

A complete response should make the task visible before the detail: identify what must be decided, define the relevant terms, connect the evidence to teleology, and use virtue ethics to test the result.

The final sentence about virtue ethics should answer the question actually asked rather than merely repeat the topic.

The controlling limit is specific: Theories can conflict and should not be selected only because one supports the preferred answer.

Keep that virtue ethics limit beside the worked example, because it separates a careful busi5161 answer from one that sounds confident but claims more than the task or evidence supports.

For revision, retrieve deontology, teleology and virtue ethics without notes, explain their relationship aloud, then complete a changed version of the application: test an action through duties, consequences and professional character.

Record the first failed teleology reasoning move and repair it before attempting another case.

Compare advice options

Q. AskSia-authored practice. One option maximises expected return but exposes the client to a loss they cannot tolerate. How do the lenses help?
  • 1State relevant duties.
  • 1Compare likely harms and benefits.
  • 1Ask what a trustworthy adviser would do.
  • 1Explain conflicts and decision.
Duties of care and candour, asymmetric client harm and professional prudence all challenge the return-only option; record why tolerable risk constrains the recommendation.
Sia tip — Multiple lenses expose reasons a single metric misses.
Glossary

Key terms

deontology
Reasoning centred on duties and constraints. This chapter uses the concept when students test an action through duties, consequences and professional character. Use this definition when the task is to test an action through duties, consequences and professional character.
teleology
Reasoning centred on consequences or ends. It helps explain the reasoning required to test an action through duties, consequences and professional character. Use this definition when the task is to test an action through duties, consequences and professional character.
virtue ethics
Reasoning centred on character and practical excellence. Its limit matters because theories can conflict and should not be selected only because one supports the preferred answer. Use this definition when the task is to test an action through duties, consequences and professional character.
