My LMS sync keeps failing

Troubleshooting · Last updated May 2026

LMS sync issues feel scary the first time, but they almost always come down to something on the LMS side — not something broken in AskSia. Here's the diagnostic flow we use ourselves.

1. Token expired

This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Every LMS issues your AskSia connection a token, and every LMS expires tokens on its own schedule. Canvas refreshes silently. Blackboard expires every 30 to 90 days depending on your school. Brightspace lasts a while but rotates eventually. Moodle tokens can be revoked by your school admin without warning.

Fix: Go to Settings → Integrations, click the failing LMS, and hit Reconnect. You'll sign in once and the sync resumes immediately. None of your saved data is lost.

2. The course was archived

At end-of-term, most schools archive courses. Archived courses become read-only or are hidden entirely, and AskSia can no longer pull updates.

Fix: If the course just ended, this is normal — the existing material is still in AskSia for review, you just can't sync new content because there isn't any. If a course is archived mid-term (rare, but it happens during instructor changes), email your professor's department.

3. Permission scope changed

Sometimes a school's IT admin changes what third-party tools are allowed to read. You won't get a notification — your sync will just start coming up empty or partial.

Fix: Disconnect the LMS from Settings → Integrations, then reconnect. The new OAuth flow uses the latest permission scope. If the reconnect itself fails with a permission error, your school has restricted the tool — email contact@asksia.ai and we'll send your IT desk a one-page explainer.

4. The slower cases

  • School network throttling. Try again on home wifi.
  • A heavy course load. First sync with 8+ courses can take 10 minutes — wait it out.
  • An odd file format. Rare. Upload it manually and tell us — we'll fix the parser.

If nothing works

Email contact@asksia.ai with your LMS name, school, and a screenshot. We can usually tell you whether it's a token, scope, or school-side block within minutes.

If the issue is that your LMS connection never set up cleanly to begin with, walk back through the original connection guide. For Canvas, that's Connect Canvas to AskSia.
