What AP Environmental Science covers
Nine College Board CED units, each with its score share and a free unit guide. The percentages are the official Section I weighting ranges — size your review time by them.
How AP Environmental Science is assessed
Every figure below is source-verified against the official College Board specification. Confirm the current structure, timing and tools on the official specification before test day.

Annual wind generation
- Step 1Average power is 75 MW × 0.36 = 27 MW.
- Step 2Annual energy is 27 MW × 8,760 h = 236,520 MWh.
- Step 3Check that multiplying power by time produces energy; capacity factor is not conversion efficiency.
Key terms and glossary for AP Environmental Science
- Describe
- Report what changes, where, or how two values compare.
- Explain
- Connect a named cause to the stated outcome through an environmental mechanism.
- Justify
- Cite responsive data and explain why they support the claim or proposed action.
- Calculate
- Write a valid setup, preserve units, and give a reasonable numeric answer.
- System boundary
- Name the place, time, reservoirs, organisms, and flows included in the analysis.
- Source
- The process or reservoir that adds material or energy to the system.
- Sink
- A compartment that receives and stores material for the stated interval.
- Limiting factor
- A resource or condition whose scarcity or excess restricts a population or process.
- Dose-response
- A relationship between dose and the frequency or magnitude of a biological response.
- Dimensional analysis
- A setup in which conversion factors cancel unwanted units and leave the requested unit.
AP Environmental Science FAQ
Is the May 2027 AP Environmental Science exam digital?
Yes. The standard administration is fully digital in Bluebook, including typed free responses.
What calculator is available?
Bluebook supplies Desmos scientific. The dated May 2027 policy permits four-function with square root or nongraphing scientific handheld calculators and excludes graphing or storage-capable handhelds.
Does AP Environmental Science provide a formula sheet?
Bluebook-only reference information is verified, but the final May 2027 reference-screen contents have not been locally captured. This guide teaches every relationship it uses and does not invent a finalized supplied-formula list.
How many free-response questions are there?
The current contract has three ten-point tasks in a 70-minute section: investigation design, quantitative-data analysis, and an environmental problem with calculations.
Why do calculations show setup and units?
The scoring structure can separate a valid setup from a final numeric answer. Parentheses, dimensional analysis, units, and magnitude checks prevent a calculator display from hiding an invalid model.
Does this guide reproduce released AP questions?
No. It uses clean-room descriptions of methods, traps, and rubric topology; released and restricted wording and figures are not reproduced.
| Item | Detail | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Potential use | Qualifying AP scores may support college credit, advanced placement, or both | Policies differ by institution and program |
| Policy owner | Each college or university sets its own policy | Check the receiving institution's current published policy |
| Score reporting | Students select recipients through College Board procedures | Deadlines and fees depend on the reporting route |

How to study for AP Environmental Science
Size effort by weight first: carry the most Section I score. Work each unit as a loop — read the unit guide, drill its mechanism routes and error repairs, then rehearse the FRQ task language — and return to the weighting table before every full review pass.
