Find the stage before the term
Which stage of the cognitive pipeline — attention and interpretation, encoding, storage, retrieval, or judgment — does the described behavior actually load on?
The traps live on stage boundaries: an encoding failure blamed on retrieval, a cue benefit read as new learning, a shortcut named from its outcome.
Mechanism route and repair branches
Step 1 · Split what arrives from what is imposed
Perception runs both directions: data building upward, schemas and perceptual sets pressing downward. Attention is the gate — what is not selected can change unnoticed.
- Diagnostic cue: A friend reads a blurry word as their own name, and the answer calls it bottom-up processing.
- Wrong branch: Processing direction is assigned from the stimulus being physical, not from where the interpretation came from.
- Repair: Ask what supplied the reading: page features mean bottom-up; expectation or a primed schema means top-down — and readiness to see one thing is a perceptual set.
Step 2 · Place information in its memory system
Classify by conscious access: explicit knowledge you can state, implicit skill you can only show. Working memory is a workspace with parts; naming one part is not naming the system.
- Diagnostic cue: A question asking for the system that holds a number while dialing is answered with one named component.
- Wrong branch: A component of working memory is offered where the working system is the target, or the reverse.
- Repair: Match the grain: the system is the workspace, the components are its parts. Answer at the grain the prompt names.
Step 3 · Make encoding do deliberate work
Depth is an activity — meaning-based judgments beat sound- and appearance-based ones on identical material. Spacing beats massing; chunking and mnemonics restructure input.
Step 4 · Match the retrieval task to its support
Producing from nothing is recall; spotting among options is recognition. Retrieval succeeds when test cues match encoding, and practicing retrieval beats rereading.
Step 5 · Name the judgment rule from the information used
Resemblance to a category means representativeness; ease of recall means availability. Algorithms guarantee but cost time; framing, mental set, and sunk costs block specific moves.
- Diagnostic cue: After a widely reported crash a traveler overestimates flying risk, and the answer says representativeness.
- Wrong branch: The two shortcuts are traded because both end in a bad estimate.
- Repair: Recover what the judge used: vivid instances coming easily to mind is availability; matching a case to a stereotype is representativeness. A wrong outcome identifies neither.

Reading the serial-position curve without inventing a story
Check the horizontal axis before interpreting anything: it is position in the study list, not elapsed time, so a downward slope here is not a forgetting curve. The two lines separate the mechanisms at the two ends. Early positions stay high on both tests because those words were rehearsed into more durable storage — primacy survives the delay. Final positions are high only on the immediate test: their advantage came from still sitting in short-term memory, and a filled delay empties that store, so recency collapses while primacy stands. When the two ends behave differently under the same delay, one storage story cannot explain both. The curves are group means across many lists; they license claims about positions on average, not about whether any particular word will be recalled.
