Building the Commercialisation Proposal

The proposal is an investor decision document

The group proposal combines an executive summary, a concise Lean Canvas with elaboration, an implementation timeline, references and a clear work allocation.

It is written for potential investors who may not have technical depth, so the technology must be translated into customer value, implementation evidence and commercial consequences.

Follow the marking structure

The rubric allocates attention across the canvas, implementation and clarity.

Revenue and cost items need explicit estimates, key metrics need a rationale and the timeline should follow short build, measure and learn cycles. The source files disagree on group size and total word range, so those operational details must be checked against the live task brief rather than silently combined.

Turn assumptions into an implementation cycle

Q [10 marks]. Plan the first cycle for a bicycle-fleet damage classifier using task, duration, evaluation and decision criteria. The marks shown are an AskSia study allocation and are not the University's marking scheme.

  • 3Name the riskiest assumption and minimum test.
  • 3Choose measures and a time boundary.
  • 4Set proceed, revise and stop decisions.
The riskiest assumption is that earlier classification changes repair decisions enough to justify integration. A four-week pilot at one depot can compare inspection time, missed faults and repair turnaround with a similar depot using the current process. Proceed if turnaround improves without an unacceptable rise in false alerts, revise if time improves but repair decisions do not, and stop if the system increases review work without improving repair outcomes. The next cycle should address the result rather than add unrelated features.
Sia tip — Give each timeline cycle an assumption, a measure and a decision. A list of development tasks is not yet a learning plan.
Glossary

Key terms

Executive Summary
A concise account of the venture, the role of AI, the rationale and the evidence needed for an investor decision.
Implementation Timeline
A sequence of time-bounded venture cycles linking tasks and minimum products to evaluation and learning.
Explicit Estimate
A stated revenue or cost amount grounded in an assumption that can be checked and revised.
Work Distribution
A record showing how responsibility for the group submission was allocated among members.
Build-measure-learn
A short-cycle method that builds a minimum test, observes evidence and uses the result to revise the next action.
FAQ

Building the Commercialisation Proposal FAQ

What sections does the business proposal need?

The detailed guidelines call for an executive summary, a Lean Canvas with any appropriate elaboration, an implementation timeline, relevant references and the distribution of member work. The cover and formatting requirements also matter. Use the current Moodle brief for operational details because some ranges conflict across the available files.

How should I handle revenue and cost estimates?

State the main items explicitly and reveal the assumptions behind them. A revenue figure should connect price, customer count and timing; a cost figure should separate fixed setup from variable delivery where possible. The purpose is not false precision but allowing a reader to test whether the venture can reach a sustainable point.

What does a strong implementation timeline show?

It shows short cycles with a duration, a task or minimum product, an evaluation method and a decision based on the evidence. The course guidance invokes build, measure and learn to reduce market risk. A timeline containing only development activities describes work but does not show how uncertainty will be reduced.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Turn every rubric criterion into a review question and assign an owner. Read the final draft horizontally across segment, problem, value, solution, channel, revenue, costs, metrics and advantage. Then read the timeline vertically to confirm that each cycle tests one of those claims and changes a later decision.

Build an evidence ledger with four columns: proposal claim, supporting observation, unresolved assumption and next test. Use it to challenge vague statements such as large market, low cost or strong demand. Replace each with a defined customer, an explicit estimate or a testable condition.

Check the executive summary last, after the canvas and timeline agree, because it should report the argument rather than introduce a different one. Review revenue and costs as quantities: identify the payer, unit, price logic, delivery resources and the point at which the venture must learn before spending more.

Read every citation beside the sentence it supports and remove references that decorate a paragraph without grounding a claim. Finally, conduct a member handoff. Each person explains another member's section and traces it back to the same customer problem. Any contradiction discovered in that explanation returns to the canvas before submission.

Use the final ten-minute review to compare headings, canvas labels and timeline terms so the same concept is not given three names that make one coherent plan look fragmented.
