PMGM7001 Chap.10 Leading Environmental Initiatives
Leading Environmental Initiatives
Understanding before leading
The session on environmental initiatives has two elements in the syllabus: understanding environmental challenges, and leveraging value and social identity. The case is Redress, a Hong Kong charity founded to tackle the waste and pollution created by fashion.
It reports the industry's share of carbon emissions, its water pollution, rising production and Hong Kong's growing daily textile waste.
Prevention before recycling
The charity's principle is that recycling is not the ultimate solution. It aims to cut overproduction by working with designers, consumers and the industry towards circular fashion, in which garments are designed to last and kept in use.
Its programmes include a global sustainable design award, an annual clothing drive with corporate sorting teams, a take-back scheme with retailers, and second-hand pop-up shops designed to look like boutiques.
Value and social identity
The charity defines itself as an environmental charity rather than a social enterprise, hires on shared values and grows leaders from within.
Its programmes also offer identities to outsiders: designers who treat zero waste as a craft standard, employees who have seen the problem at first hand, and shoppers for whom second-hand is a choice.
The leader's dilemma
Nearly half the charity's support comes from government and only a quarter from sales, a share of donations cannot be used, and in 2020 its fund-raising was disrupted.
Its leaders must choose between fixing short-term finances and pursuing long-term change in the industry.

Key terms
- Circular Fashion
- Making garments ethically and sustainably, designing them to last, and keeping them in use without loss of resources.
- Bottom Layer
- The share of donated clothing, such as logo-bearing uniforms, that can be neither reused nor upcycled and must still be stored or disposed of.
- Upcycling
- Turning discarded garments or materials into new products of equal or higher value instead of breaking them down.
- Unrestricted Funding
- Money a charity may spend as it chooses, which the case reports comes mainly from its pop-up shop sales.
Leading Environmental Initiatives FAQ
Why does the charity say recycling is not the solution?
Because most of the harm occurs before a garment reaches a consumer, in overproduction and manufacturing. Recycling deals with the result. The charity therefore aims first at designers, the industry and buying habits, and treats recycling as the last resort.
What does value and social identity mean in this session?
It means using people's values and group identities to spread the change. The charity hires on shared values, defines itself as environmental rather than commercial, and gives designers, corporate volunteers and shoppers identities in which sustainable fashion is part of who they are.
How effective has the charity been?
A critical answer weighs real gains, such as most collected clothing being reused and a global design award, against the scale of the problem, the constraints trained designers meet inside large brands, and a funding base that depends heavily on government.
Assessment move
List the charity's programmes, then mark for each whether it acts at the source of harm or at the end, and which identity it offers to whom. Two columns and a short verdict are the skeleton of paper topic seven.
