ACT501 Overview

Auditing
— Name the assertion, name the direction, then choose the procedure that could find the error.
  • Lingnan University
  • Term 1, 2026-27
  • Master of Accountancy core course
  • 3 credits
  • Accounting

What this course is actually asking you to do

This is a core postgraduate course in the theory and practice of financial auditing, taught in the Department of Accountancy within the Master of Accountancy programme.

  • Assessed by Class participation, a group project on published inspection reports, a two-hour test and a three-hour final examination.
  • The skill being tested Naming the assertion at issue, naming the direction the error would run, and choosing a procedure that could actually detect it.
  • Hardest step Testing completeness, because the missing item is by definition not in the records you would otherwise sample.
  • Where to confirm The test date, the group size and any change to the split are controlled by the course Moodle page.

How ACT501 is assessed

ComponentWeightFormat
Class participation10%Attendance, preparation and contribution in class, against a published rubric
Group project15%Case analysis of published inspection reports on one audit firm, presented in class
Test25%Two hours, placed in the eighth teaching week, time and venue to be announced
Final examination50%Three hours, covering the principles and concepts of the course

The published syllabus sets class participation at ten per cent, group assignments at fifteen, and examinations at seventy-five, made up of a test at twenty-five and a final at fifty; the four total one hundred. The assessment page adds the durations, two hours for the midterm and three for the final. Two points differ inside the course's own materials: the syllabus says groups are normally five to six students while the group project instruction says seven to eight, and the two documents split the group mark differently. No late-submission penalty rate appears anywhere. A numeric attendance threshold is not stated in the course materials, and neither is a hurdle or a pass mark, so check the course Moodle page and the Regulations Governing University Examinations and Course Work for anything that bears on whether you pass.

What ACT501 covers

Twelve chapters follow the published teaching sequence from the engagement framework through assertions, evidence, procedures and documentation to planning, risk, internal control, the transaction cycles, completion, reporting, ethics and sustainability assurance.

01

Assurance, Attestation and the Financial Statement Audit

three nested sets and the definition that separates them · why an absent owner pays for evidence · information asymmetry, conflict of interest and information risk · the work that looks like an audit and is not

Three words that name three different sets of work

The opening lecture spends its first stretch on vocabulary, and the reason becomes obvious once the shape is visible.

  • Assurance, attestation and audit as three nested sets
  • The four load-bearing parts of the standard definition
  • Service lines and the staffing ladder inside a public accounting firm
  • Separation of ownership from management, and what follows
  • Information asymmetry, conflict of interest and information risk
  • Why the party being examined is the party paying the fee
02

Reasonable Assurance, Materiality and the Audit Opinion

three inherent limits on how much assurance is possible · positive and negative forms of conclusion · materiality as a judgement about readers · material against pervasive, and the four reports

Two thresholds hidden in the objectives

An audit has two stated objectives.

  • The two objectives, and the two technical words inside them
  • Three inherent limitations on the level of assurance
  • Absolute, reasonable and limited assurance, and the wording of each
  • Positive and negative forms of conclusion
  • Materiality as a threshold about readers rather than a percentage
  • Material against pervasive, and why both judgements are needed
03

Auditor Liability, Independence and Professional Skepticism

six situations that create criminal exposure · the 1856 negligence formula and the word unintentionally · independence in fact against independence in appearance · four alerts that make scepticism testable

Where the register changes

Everything earlier in the opening lecture explains what an audit is. This part explains what happens to the practitioner when the work goes wrong, and what the standards positively demand in order to make that less likely.

  • Six situations creating criminal exposure, and what they share
  • The statutory offence of omitting a required report statement
  • The 1856 negligence formula, and the word unintentionally
  • Symmetry between omission and commission in that formula
  • Who the report is addressed to, and who may sue
  • Ethics and independence, scepticism, judgement as three separate duties
04

Auditing Standards and the Shape of an Audit

the Hong Kong families and the separate standard for less complex entities · quality management above the engagement · the listed against non-listed fork · the stages an engagement runs through

Two structural things at once

This part of the course settles which body of rules an engagement is performed under, and the order in which an audit happens.

  • The families inside the Hong Kong umbrella phrase
  • A separate standard for audits of less complex entities
  • Sustainability assurance requirements as a new family
  • Quality management as a firm-level rather than engagement-level layer
  • The mainland and international systems
  • The listed against non-listed fork in the American system
05

Management Assertions and What Could Go Wrong

representations that arrive with the document · balance and transaction families with three members shared · direction of concern, and why it is structural · assertion to misstatement to evidence to procedure

Representations that arrive with the document

Management assertions are the claims, spoken or merely implied, that management makes about how items in the accounts have been recognised, measured, presented and disclosed.

  • Representations inherent in presenting financial statements
  • Who is responsible for the assertions, and who is not
  • Six assertions about balances at the period end
  • Six assertions about transactions and events over the period
  • The three members shared between the two families
  • Direction of concern, and why it is structural rather than motivational
06

Audit Evidence: Sufficiency, Appropriateness, Reliability

what the accounting records comprise and what sits outside them · relevance judged before reliability · five comparisons that rank a source · why route demotes a document that origin promoted

What the word covers

Audit evidence is everything the auditor draws on when weighing the claims management has made in the accounts and settling the conclusion the opinion rests on.

  • The definition of evidence, and what it deliberately does not exclude
  • Three questions, and which of them this topic answers
  • The accounting records, item by item
  • Information from other sources, internal and external
  • Sufficiency as quantity, appropriateness as quality
  • Relevance judged before reliability
07

The Seven Audit Procedures and When Each One Works

purpose layer against the act performed · vouching and tracing along one document chain · the three process rules that make a confirmation valid · required, optional, required for analytical work

Two layers, and why merging them costs marks

Procedures sit on two layers. The first is purpose.

  • Purpose layer: risk assessment, tests of controls, substantive procedures
  • Tests of details against substantive analytical procedures
  • The seven specific acts, and what each one can establish
  • Why inquiry alone is never sufficient evidence
  • The two limits on observation
  • Vouching against tracing, and the population each one samples
08

Audit Documentation and Assembling the Audit File

the experienced auditor as the standard of detail · six format elements and the tick mark that fails · permanent against current file · sixty days to assemble, and what may happen afterwards

Two purposes pointing in different directions

Audit documentation, or working papers, is the written record of the work done including planning, of the evidence that bore on it, and of the conclusions reached.

  • Two purposes: the basis for the report, and evidence of compliance
  • Five further functions, including individual accountability
  • The experienced-auditor standard of detail
  • What the file must let a stranger understand
  • Contents, from strategy through programmes to evidence
  • Six format elements, and the tick mark that fails without a legend
09

Planning the Audit and the Audit Risk Model

acceptance questions that cannot be repaired later · choosing and defending a materiality benchmark · inherent and control risk assessed, detection risk set · nature, timing and extent as the response

Where this sits in the term

The published teaching schedule gives week three to planning an audit, covering preliminary engagement activities, planning activities and materiality, and week four to audit risk and risk assessment.

  • Where planning and risk sit in the published teaching schedule
  • Acceptance and continuance as a separate stage
  • Overall strategy against detailed audit plan
  • Planning as a narrowing that ends in named procedures
  • Choosing and defending a materiality benchmark
  • Overall, performance and lower thresholds
10

Internal Control and Auditing the Transaction Cycles

the components a system of internal control is grouped into · the walkthrough and its two outputs · preventive against detective controls · revenue tested against overstatement, purchases against understatement

Five weeks of the term in one framework

The published teaching schedule gives week five to understanding the entity's system of internal control, week six to the auditor's responses to assessed risks together with the revenue cycle, week seven to the purchase cycle, week eight to cash balances and week nine to the production cycle.

  • Where the five weeks sit in the published schedule
  • Internal control as a system rather than a department
  • The components the standards group the system into
  • The walkthrough, and its two outputs
  • Preventive against detective controls
  • Why a detective control needs evidence of the detection
11

Completing the Audit and the Auditor's Report

adjusting against non-adjusting events and the question that sorts them · the search for what is not recorded · where a representation letter really sits · the nine elements of the report, in order

What is still owed after the testing stops

The published teaching schedule gives week ten to completing the audit and week eleven to the auditor's reports.

  • Completion as a view of the statements as a whole
  • Adjusting against non-adjusting events, and the sorting question
  • The ordinary procedures used to find subsequent events
  • The search for unrecorded contingent liabilities
  • Where a representation letter sits in the reliability ranking
  • Communication with those charged with governance
12

Professional Ethics and Sustainability Assurance

the fundamental principles and the identify, evaluate, respond shape · five threat families and what a safeguard must do · the reasonable and informed third party test · assurance on sustainability information

Two learning outcomes in one chapter

One of the course learning outcomes asks students to describe the fundamental principles of the code of ethics for professional accountants, to identify and evaluate specific situations that could threaten compliance with them, and to apply appropriate safeguards to eliminate or reduce the threat.

  • The two learning outcomes that meet in this chapter
  • Integrity, objectivity, competence and due care, confidentiality, professional behaviour
  • Identify, evaluate, respond as the shape of every ethics answer
  • Self-interest, self-review, advocacy, familiarity and intimidation
  • Why oversight reaches some threats and not others
  • The reasonable and informed third party test

Its stated objective is to develop professional knowledge and application skills in auditing financial statements, alongside professional ethics, audit market issues and the fundamental concepts of sustainability reporting and assurance.

Three quarters of the mark is decided by two written papers, and the published rubric for them is unusually informative: forty per cent for comprehension of the relevant concepts, forty for their application to the problem posed, ten for expressing ideas logically and clearly, and ten for quality of English.

Almost everything in the guide below is organised around the second of those forty per cent bands, because that is where prepared candidates separate from well-read ones.

Assurance, Attestation and the Financial Statement Audit

The opening chapter fixes three words that sound interchangeable and are not.

Assurance services improve the quality of information for a decision maker; attestation services are a subset in which a practitioner examines whether management's assertion can be relied upon; financial statement audits are a subset of that.

The chapter then explains why anybody buys the service, through the separation of ownership from management, the information asymmetry and conflict of interest that follow, and the information risk an audit exists to reduce.

Reasonable Assurance, Materiality and the Audit Opinion

Two technical words inside the stated objectives decide everything the auditor later does.

Reasonable assurance is high but not absolute, and three inherent limitations explain why the gap cannot be closed. Materiality is the threshold above which a misstatement could be expected to influence users' decisions.

The chapter closes on the four opinions, reached by asking whether the unresolved problem is a misstatement or a gap in evidence, and then whether its effect is confined or pervasive.

Auditor Liability, Independence and Professional Skepticism

Criminal exposure requires participation: inciting, helping, concealing, impeding, taking payment for silence, or knowingly causing a required statement to be omitted from a report.

Civil exposure requires neither agreement nor intent, resting on a negligence formula from 1856 whose key word is unintentionally.

Against those sit three positive requirements, and the chapter separates them so that a described failure can be attributed to the right one.

Auditing Standards and the Shape of an Audit

Which rules govern an engagement depends on where the entity is, whether it is listed, what is being reported on and how complex the entity is.

The chapter sets out the Hong Kong families including the separate standard for less complex entities and the sustainability assurance requirements, the mainland and international systems, and the American fork between listed and non-listed companies.

It then maps the stages an engagement runs through, which is also the order of the teaching schedule.

Management Assertions and What Could Go Wrong

Everything in the second half of the course begins here. The chapter sets out the two assertion families, the three members they share, and the direction of error each assertion guards against.

The asymmetry between existence and completeness is structural rather than psychological, and it is the reason procedures have to run in opposite directions along the same chain of documents.

Audit Evidence: Sufficiency, Appropriateness, Reliability

Sufficiency measures quantity, appropriateness measures quality, and appropriateness splits into relevance and reliability.

The chapter works through what the accounting records comprise, what sits outside them, the five comparisons that rank reliability by source and route, and the category that goes wrong in real files, which is a document that began outside the entity and reached the auditor through it.

The Seven Audit Procedures and When Each One Works

Procedures sit on two layers: the purpose they serve and the act performed.

The chapter separates risk assessment procedures, tests of controls and substantive work, then takes the seven acts one at a time with the limits attached to observation and inquiry.

Vouching and tracing are treated as one act in two directions, because choosing the direction is choosing the population and the population decides which errors could ever be found.

Audit Documentation and Assembling the Audit File

The standard of detail is defined by a named reader rather than by length: an experienced auditor with no previous connection to the engagement must be able to follow it.

The chapter covers contents, the six format elements, the permanent and current files, retention, and the rule that bites after assembly, which forbids deletion absolutely and permits addition only with its reasons recorded.

Planning the Audit and the Audit Risk Model

Acceptance questions come before planning and cannot be repaired later. Materiality becomes three linked decisions rather than one figure.

The chapter then separates the two risk components the auditor assesses from the one the auditor sets, and works through reading a paragraph of client facts as assessments attached to named assertions.

Internal Control and Auditing the Transaction Cycles

Five weeks of the schedule are covered here: the components a system of internal control is grouped into, the walkthrough that confirms the auditor's understanding, the difference between preventive and detective controls, and the four transaction cycles with the direction of risk each one carries.

Completing the Audit and the Auditor's Report

Completion concerns the statements as a whole and the passage of time.

The chapter sorts subsequent events by whether the condition existed at the reporting date, covers the search for unrecorded contingent liabilities, places representation letters correctly in the reliability ranking, and sets out the nine elements of a report in the order they appear.

Professional Ethics and Sustainability Assurance

The final chapter covers the fundamental principles, the five threat families and the identify, evaluate, respond shape that every ethics answer needs, together with the external test the code applies.

It then carries the same machinery onto sustainability information, which the syllabus names among its learning outcomes and its reading list.

Two details are worth checking on the course site before you rely on either version. The syllabus says groups are normally five to six students, while the group project instruction on the course site says seven to eight people per group.

And the syllabus rubric splits the group mark as content and subject matter knowledge sixty per cent, organisation and presentation twenty, verbal behaviour ten and non-verbal behaviour ten, while the project instruction splits it as content, subject matter knowledge and analysis sixty, reporting style and presentation twenty, and individual presentation skills twenty.

Both come from the course's own materials; treat the project instruction as the operational document for this project.

How to use this guide

Read the front matter first, then work one chapter at a time.

Each chapter ends in practice items with full answers; write your own answer before reading them, because recognising a good answer and producing one under time pressure are different abilities and only the second is assessed.

The practice chapter works a full set in the published question mix, and the closing chapter is a revision pass for the morning of a paper.

Evidence and assessment control

Assessment labels and weights follow the published course syllabus and the assessment page for this offering.

Teaching explanations, worked examples and practice items are independently authored and are not University assessment material; any marks shown on them are an AskSia study allocation. The course materials state no hurdle, no minimum mark on any component, no attendance threshold and no late-submission penalty rate, so confirm those, the test date and any change to the split on the course site.

A numeric attendance threshold is not stated anywhere in the course materials, and neither is a hurdle or a pass mark, so check the course Moodle page and the Regulations Governing University Examinations and Course Work for anything that bears on whether you pass.

Turn one client fact into an assertion, a direction and a procedure

Q [9 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. A distributor's year-end receivables include 640 thousand invoiced to a distributor in another territory for goods the distributor holds on consignment and has not yet sold. Name the assertions at issue, state the direction of the likely misstatement in both affected captions, and give one procedure for each assertion. The marks shown are an AskSia study allocation and are not the University's marking scheme.

Three tiers and a warning. Quoting the tiers without the warning is how an answer ends up defending a weak procedure on a high-risk assertion.
  • 3Name the assertions, one over the balance and one over the transaction.
  • 3State what each misstatement does to receivables, revenue and inventory.
  • 3Give a procedure that could detect an error in the direction you named.
Two assertions are engaged. Rights and obligations over the goods, because consigned stock remains the entity's until the distributor sells it, and occurrence over the sale, because no sale has taken place. The direction is overstatement in two places at once: revenue and receivables are too high by the invoiced amount, and inventory is too low if the goods were removed from stock when they were shipped. For rights and obligations, read the consignment agreement and confirm the arrangement and the quantities held directly with the distributor, because a confirmation received directly from an independent party outranks any internal schedule. For occurrence, vouch the invoice back to despatch documentation and to the terms of the agreement, and check whether cash was received or a credit note raised after the year end.
Sia tip — Consignment stock changes two captions in opposite directions. Write both, because naming only the receivable shows you recognised the word rather than traced the entry.
Glossary

Key terms

Assurance Service
Independent professional work that raises the quality of information, or of the setting around it, for somebody who has to decide. It holds attestation work and audits of accounts inside it.
Information Risk
The danger that what a company's management circulates is untrue or misleads. Reducing it is the economic reason an audit is bought.
Reasonable Assurance
A high level of comfort that stops short of certainty, expressed positively in the opinion. Three inherent limits put certainty out of reach.
Materiality
The largest error the accounts could carry while leaving every reader's decision on the basis of them unchanged.
Management Assertion
A claim, spoken or merely implied, about how an item in the accounts has been recognised, measured, presented and disclosed.
Completeness
The claim that nothing which belonged in the books has been left out. Because the missing item is not in the records, the test has to start outside them.
Sufficient Appropriate Evidence
Enough evidence to answer the assessed risk, and evidence good enough to bear on the claim and to signal its real state dependably.
Vouching
Starting from something already booked and walking it backwards to the paperwork that started it, which tests existence or occurrence rather than completeness.
Detection Risk
The danger that the auditor's own work fails to find an error that is really there. It is set through what work is done, when, and how widely, rather than assessed.
Self-review Threat
The danger that a practitioner cannot properly weigh the outcome of an earlier judgement or service delivered by that practitioner or by the firm.
FAQ

ACT501 FAQ

How much does each piece of work count?

The published syllabus splits the mark four ways: class participation ten per cent, group assignments fifteen, and examinations seventy-five made up of a test at twenty-five and a final at fifty. The assessment page on the course site repeats the same four components and adds the durations, two hours for the midterm and three for the final. The four weights total one hundred, so there is no residual component to look for.

When is the test, and what will it cover?

The teaching schedule places the midterm examination in the eighth teaching week, alongside the audit of cash balances, and records the time and venue as to be announced. So the week is published and the date is not.

By that point the schedule has covered the introduction to auditing, assertions and evidence, planning and materiality, risk assessment, internal control, responses to assessed risks with the revenue cycle, and the purchase cycle. Confirm the date on the course site rather than working from anything you have been told informally.

What is the group project, and what is actually required?

It is a case analysis built on published inspection reports of one audit firm, with a maximum of three reports for the same firm drawn from recent years.

The slide pack has to introduce the inspecting body's responsibilities and the firm's background, then critically discuss four to five audit deficiencies identified in the reports, discuss the relevant auditing standards and how those procedures should have been performed, design substantive procedures covering nature, timing and extent for the accounts or disclosures identified, and give recommendations.

Every group member must present, in a fifteen-minute presentation followed by questions.

Why do existence and completeness need different procedures?

Because the error each one admits sits in a different population. An item recorded but not real can be selected from the ledger and traced back to its source, so vouching reaches it. An item that should have been recorded and was not is absent from the ledger by definition, so no sample drawn from the ledger could ever contain it.

Completeness therefore has to be tested from outside the records: from despatch notes, goods received notes, supplier statements or payments made after the year end, following each forward into the accounts.

What makes one piece of audit evidence better than another?

Two questions asked in order, and neither is about how official the document looks. Who prepared it: evidence from a knowledgeable source independent of the company outranks evidence generated inside it, and internally generated evidence is stronger where controls over that information are effective. And how it reached the auditor: obtained directly beats obtained through the client, and an original beats a copy.

A bank statement handed over by the finance team and the same statement received from the bank carry identical information and sit on different rungs.

Is a written representation from management enough to close a point?

Only where no other evidence could reasonably be expected to exist, and even then it corroborates rather than substitutes. A representation is internally generated evidence from the party with an interest in the answer, which places it low in the reliability ranking.

Where third-party evidence is available, a team that resolves the point by letter alone has substituted where the standards expect corroboration, and the substitution is visible on the file.

How should an ethics question be answered?

In three steps, because that is how the code works. Identify the threat, naming the family: self-interest, self-review, advocacy, familiarity or intimidation. Evaluate whether it is at an acceptable level, applying the test the code sets, which asks whether a reasonable and informed third party weighing the facts would conclude that compliance with the fundamental principles is compromised.

Then respond, by eliminating the circumstance, applying a safeguard that reduces the threat to an acceptable level, or declining or ending the engagement.

Is there a hurdle or an attendance requirement?

No hurdle, minimum mark, attendance threshold or late-submission penalty rate is stated anywhere in the published course materials, which is not the same as a rule that none exists. Class participation is worth ten per cent and its published rubric weights attendance alongside preparation and contribution, so attendance bears on a mark without any threshold being published.

The syllabus also directs students to the Regulations Governing University Examinations and Course Work. A numeric attendance threshold is not stated anywhere in the course materials, and neither is a hurdle or a pass mark, so check the course Moodle page and the Regulations Governing University Examinations and Course Work for anything that bears on whether you pass.

Chapter questions

Questions students ask in each ACT501 chapter

Is an audit a type of assurance service, or the other way round?
An audit is a type of assurance service, and more precisely a type of attestation service, which is itself a subset of assurance. The sets nest inwards: every financial statement audit is an attestation and every attestation is assurance, while a great deal of assurance work is neither. Reversing that order is the classic wrong answer in multiple-choice sections on this topic, and it is worth drawing the three bands once rather than memorising a sentence. Chapter 01 · Assurance, Attestation and the Financial Statement Audit
Why can an audit never give absolute assurance?
Three reasons, and only one of them is about the auditor. Financial reporting itself involves judgements and estimates that no amount of work turns into single correct figures. Audit procedures rest on testing rather than examining everything, and the auditor cannot compel outsiders to respond. And the work has to be completed within a reasonable period and at a reasonable cost. An answer that explains the gap purely as a sampling problem has named one cause of three, which is why the limitation is described as inherent. Chapter 02 · Reasonable Assurance, Materiality and the Audit Opinion
Can an auditor be prosecuted for missing a fraud?
Not on those facts alone. The criminal situations listed in this course all involve the practitioner joining in: inciting, helping or encouraging, agreeing to conceal or fabricate, impeding a prosecution, taking payment for silence, or knowingly or recklessly causing a required statement to be omitted from the report. Every one except the last needs an agreement with somebody, and the last needs knowledge or recklessness. A description of work that was simply careless belongs in the civil column instead, where no intent is required. Chapter 03 · Auditor Liability, Independence and Professional Skepticism
Which standards apply to a small audit?
In Hong Kong an eligible entity may be audited under a separate set of standards written for audits of the financial statements of less complex entities, which exists precisely because applying rules designed for large listed groups to a very small business produces disproportionate work. What size never does is license a reduced version of the main standards. If the smaller standard applies, it is applied in full; if it does not, the ordinary standards are applied in full. Chapter 04 · Auditing Standards and the Shape of an Audit
What assertions is a company making when it reports an inventory figure?
At least four that carry real audit work. Existence, that the recorded quantities are physically there. Rights and obligations, that the company owns them rather than holding them for somebody else. Completeness, that everything owned is included, including goods in transit and stock at third-party locations. And accuracy with valuation and allocation, that the figure is carried at the lower of cost and net realisable value with damaged and obsolete lines written down. Classification and presentation add that the split between raw materials, work in progress and finished goods is right and the costing method is disclosed. Chapter 05 · Management Assertions and What Could Go Wrong
Is more evidence always better?
Only within a type. Quantity compensates for quality up to a point, but a hundred internally generated documents produced by an uncontrolled process still tell you only what that process produced. That is why the usual response to a high assessed risk is a change of procedure rather than a larger sample of the procedure already chosen, and why the two levers on sufficiency are the assessed risk and the quality of the evidence rather than sample size alone. Chapter 06 · Audit Evidence: Sufficiency, Appropriateness, Reliability
When are analytical procedures compulsory?
At two of the three points where they can be used. They are required at the planning stage, performed as risk assessment procedures to deepen the understanding of the business and point at areas carrying specific risks, and they are required again near the end of the audit to form an overall conclusion on the statements and to ask whether a risk of material misstatement went unrecognised. In between, during substantive testing, they are optional, because analytical work is only one route to comfort over a caption and the auditor may prefer tests of details. Chapter 07 · The Seven Audit Procedures and When Each One Works
How detailed does a working paper have to be?
Detailed enough that an experienced auditor with no previous connection to the engagement could understand three things from it: the nature, timing and extent of the procedures performed together with who did the work and reviewed it and when, the results and the evidence obtained, and the significant matters that arose with the conclusions reached. The test is a reader rather than a length, and because that reader is defined as competent in auditing and in the entity's industry, the file does not have to explain the subject, only this engagement. Chapter 08 · Audit Documentation and Assembling the Audit File
Which benchmark should materiality be based on?
Whichever one reflects what the readers of these particular statements care about, and the defence matters more than the choice. A profit measure suits a company whose principal readers are investors watching earnings. An asset or revenue measure suits a loss-making or volatile business, and a company borrowing against its asset base has readers whose decisions turn on asset amounts. A question that supplies revenue, profit and total assets together is inviting a choice and an explanation, and the marks are in the explanation. Chapter 09 · Planning the Audit and the Audit Risk Model
Why do auditors spend so long on controls they may not rely on?
Because understanding the system is required whether or not reliance follows. The purpose of that understanding is to identify where misstatement could arise, which is what the risk assessment is built on, and to decide whether reliance is even available. Only when a control is well designed and expected to have operated can testing it reduce substantive work. Where it is not, the understanding still earns its cost by telling the team where to concentrate substantive procedures instead. Chapter 10 · Internal Control and Auditing the Transaction Cycles
How do I decide whether an event after the year end changes the accounts?
Ask one question before any other: did the condition exist at the reporting date? If the event provides evidence about a state of affairs that was already there, the statements as drafted describe it wrongly and must be adjusted. If the condition arose afterwards, nothing in the reported figures can change, and the only remaining question is whether its size and nature mean a reader would be misled without disclosure. Size never decides the sorting; it decides only what follows once the sorting is done. Chapter 11 · Completing the Audit and the Auditor's Report
What is the difference between a self-interest and a self-review threat?
A self-interest threat leaves the judgement itself intact and gives the practitioner a reason to exercise it badly, such as a financial stake in the outcome or heavy fee dependence. A self-review threat attacks the judgement, because the practitioner would have to be willing to conclude that an earlier piece of their own work was wrong. That difference decides the remedy: oversight and independent review reach the first far better than the second, which is usually answered by not accepting both engagements at all. Chapter 12 · Professional Ethics and Sustainability Assurance
Study strategy

How to study for the exam

Carry one company you actually know through every chapter, and before reading a chapter's answer, write your own: which assertion is at risk here, in which direction, and what would find it. Then practise the move the papers are built on. Take any fact about a client, write the caption, the assertion, the direction and the procedure in four clauses, and check that the procedure could reach the direction you named.

Twenty minutes of that is worth more than a second pass over the lecture notes, because it rehearses the forty per cent of the rubric given to applying concepts specifically rather than the forty given to holding them.
