ACC1701B Chap.4 Completing the Accounting Cycle
Completing the Accounting Cycle
Dependency, reporting and reset
The accounting cycle is ordered because every later stage consumes the output of an earlier one. Transactions are analysed, journalised and posted before balances can be listed. Period-end adjustments update recognition before an adjusted trial balance is prepared.
The statements then use those adjusted balances, and closing resets the temporary accounts only after the period has been reported. Changing the order can produce internally consistent statements built from incomplete balances.
The adjusted trial balance is a handoff
This schedule proves that posted debit and credit balances agree after adjustments and supplies a controlled list for statement preparation.
It is not itself a financial statement and does not decide presentation. Revenue and expense balances feed the income statement, while asset, liability and equity balances feed financial position.
Supporting schedules for receivables, payables and other control accounts should agree with the ledger at this point so an earlier posting difference does not pass into the reports.
Bridge numbers move once
Revenue less expenses produces net income. Net income joins opening retained earnings and dividends to produce ending retained earnings.
Ending retained earnings combines with contributed capital and other equity components to give total equity. Each bridge amount should be computed at its originating schedule and carried forward unchanged.
If the destination disagrees, investigate the handoff; averaging two versions or plugging the later report destroys the reconciliation.
Closing resets measurement periods
Revenue, expenses and dividends are temporary because they describe activity during one interval. Closing transfers their net effect into retained earnings and brings each temporary balance to zero.
Assets, liabilities and equity balances are permanent and continue into the next period. Dividends are closed but are not expenses: they distribute value to owners rather than measure resources consumed to earn revenue.
The post-closing balance is diagnostic
A post-closing trial balance should contain only permanent accounts.
A surviving wage expense signals an incomplete close, while a missing receivable suggests a permanent balance was cleared incorrectly. Equality still tests only arithmetic, so inspect the account types as well as the totals. Finish by reconciling retained earnings to the roll-forward and confirming that the next period begins with resources and claims, not with the previous period's performance accounts.

Completing the Accounting Cycle FAQ
Why prepare statements after adjustments?
Adjustments complete current-period recognition. Preparing statements earlier omits earned revenue, incurred expense or required estimates and carries those errors through profit, equity and financial position.
Why are dividends closed but not expensed?
Dividends reduce retained earnings as distributions to owners; they do not measure resources consumed to earn revenue. Closing resets their period balance without turning the distribution into expense.
What appears after closing?
Only permanent assets, liabilities and equity balances should appear on the post-closing trial balance. Any surviving revenue, expense or dividend balance signals an incomplete or incorrectly posted close.
Exam move
Practise the cycle as a dependency chain rather than a list of definitions. Begin with a small adjusted trial balance and mark each balance as temporary or permanent. Prepare the income statement first, circle net income and carry that exact figure into the retained-earnings roll-forward. Circle ending retained earnings, combine it with other equity components and carry total equity into financial position.
Do not recompute bridge numbers at their destination. When the accounting equation fails, return to the originating schedule instead of changing a liability as a plug. Next write closing entries for revenue, each expense and dividends, then construct a post-closing trial balance using only permanent accounts.
Insert one deliberate error, such as leaving wages expense open or closing receivables, and diagnose it from the accounts that survive. Add a supporting-schedule check by reconciling a control account to its detail before reporting. For speed practice, write the sequence adjust, verify, report, close and verify again at the top of the page. Under each verb, note its input and output.
Finish each problem by explaining why dividends are temporary without being expenses and why closing changes the measurement period without changing the underlying economics. This method combines order, bridge control and account classification, which are more reliable than memorising closing journals in isolation.
