The Ten Fundamental Principles of a CFD Study

A method, not a menu of buttons

The course organises every simulation around ten fundamental principles. Define the engineering objective clearly. Isolate an appropriate computational domain. Match geometry fidelity to the purpose. Resolve the relevant flow physics with the mesh. Choose physical models judiciously. Treat boundary conditions as the dominant source of uncertainty.

Control numerical settings for accuracy and stability. Start simple and increase complexity progressively. Interpret results physically rather than visually.

Verify, validate and document.

The loop that the principles imply

The geometry guest lecture draws the same idea as an eight-stage workflow: define goals, identify the domain, prepare geometry, mesh, set physics and solver, compute, examine results, and update the model. The last stage sends the analyst back to earlier ones.

A first result is a diagnostic, not an answer, and the principles describe how to make each pass through the loop more trustworthy than the last.

The second wording you will meet

The quizzes are described on the course page as guided by ten fundamental principles listed in different words: problem definition, understanding the physics, geometry and domain design, meshing, physical model and numerical setup, boundary conditions and simulation, post-processing to check convergence, accuracy and stability, a solution strategy of baseline validation and sensitivity study, result interpretation, and verification, validation and documentation.

The content overlaps almost entirely, but two steps are explicit there that the lecture leaves implicit: understanding the physics first, and running a baseline before a sensitivity study.

What to be able to do

Expect to diagnose which principle a flawed plan breaks, to order a set of set-up steps defensibly, and to write answers that satisfy both wordings.

Naming the principle behind a drifting result

Q [4 marks]. A student’s room simulation shows residuals that have dropped below the stopping value, yet the monitored ventilation rate is still changing from one hundred iterations to the next. The student reports the result. Identify the principles involved and the correct action. The step weighting shown here is an AskSia study allocation and is not a University marking scheme.

  • 1State why falling residuals alone do not establish convergence.
  • 2Name the principles that the report breaks.
  • 1Give the action that resolves it.
Residuals measure how well the discretised equations are being satisfied, not whether the quantity of interest has settled. The course defines convergence as three checks together: residuals down at least a thousandfold, budgets closed, and monitored physical quantities stable. A drifting ventilation rate fails the third. Reporting it breaks the numerical-settings principle, which includes monitoring physically meaningful quantities, and the verification principle. The action is to continue iterating until the ventilation rate stabilises, check the mass balance across the openings, and only then report, recording the convergence history.
Sia tip — Put a monitor on the quantity your conclusion depends on before you start the run, not after the residuals look good.
Glossary

Key terms

Engineering Objective
The specific quantity or comparison a simulation is set up to deliver, defined before any geometry is built.
Progressive Complexity
Starting with simple geometry, coarse meshes and steady assumptions and adding detail only as the results justify it.
Sensitivity Study
A set of runs that varies one input at a time from a baseline to test how robust the conclusions are.
Physical Interpretation
Judging a result by whether directions, magnitudes and conservation make physical sense, not by its appearance.
FAQ

The Ten Fundamental Principles of a CFD Study FAQ

Why do the principles start with the objective rather than the geometry?

Because the objective decides everything downstream: which geometry features matter, where the mesh must be fine, which equations are solved and what counts as a result. A study that starts by building geometry tends to model too much in some places and too little where the answer is decided.

What does interpret physically, not visually mean in practice?

Asking whether flow directions and magnitudes are plausible, whether temperature and velocity fields obey conservation, and whether patterns match known behaviour, before trusting a contour plot. Smooth, colourful pictures can hide numerical diffusion or a wrong boundary condition.

Why are boundary conditions called the dominant source of uncertainty?

Because real inflows, wind directions, heat loads and opening conditions are rarely known exactly, and the solution follows whatever is imposed. An inappropriate condition, such as a fixed velocity at an exhaust, can force the answer regardless of mesh or model quality.

How should an answer handle the two different lists of principles?

Write it so both are satisfied: name the governing physics before describing set-up, mention the baseline and the sensitivity runs, and close with verification, validation and documentation. The lists differ in wording and grouping more than in substance.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Take each working example in the course and write a ten-line plan, one line per principle, before reading its set-up slides. Then compare your plan with the slides and note where they made a different decision and why. Ten plans make the principles automatic.
