For Cobb-Douglas utility U = x*y with equal exponents, the optimum splits income evenly between the two goods.
Quantity of × is spending divided by price: 50 / 2 = 25.
Check the tangency condition: MRS = y/x must equal px/py = 2/5. With × = 25 and y = 50/5 = 10, y/x = 10/25 = 0.4 = 2/5, which confirms it.
The trap: Dividing total income by the price of x, giving 50, which is what you would buy if you spent everything on one good. The budget constraint binds, but so does the tangency condition, and a solution that satisfies only one of the two is not an optimum. Checking MRS against the price ratio at the end catches this every time. classic slip!

What ECON301 is, and where it sits
ECON 301 is UW-Madison's intermediate microeconomics: contemporary theory of consumption, production, pricing and resource allocation, at 4 credits and intermediate level.
The difference from ECON 101 is method rather than subject. Where the introduction applies models, this course derives them. Its published outcomes ask students to apply economic models to household and firm behaviour, to specify and adapt microeconomic models for particular environments, to solve decision problems using mathematical optimisation, and to understand these models as the foundation for more advanced analysis. The third of those is the one that changes how the course feels week to week.
That is why the requisite structure matters: alongside an introductory economics course you need calculus or the department's own quantitative tools course. ECON 311 is the advanced-treatment alternative, taken with MATH 222, and the two preclude each other.

ECON301 is manageable if you keep a weekly rhythm and treat the back half as the main event. The pattern is consistent: it starts gently and steepens, and the heaviest assessment is the part that separates grades.

The mistakes that cost marks
Satisfying the constraint but not the tangency condition. An optimum needs both. Solutions that spend the whole budget on one good are the classic symptom.
Memorising results for one functional form. Exams change the form deliberately, which is why the derivation matters more than the answer.
Skipping interpretation. An algebraically correct answer with no economic reading is an incomplete answer at intermediate level.
