The Group Video Discussion

The group task is fifteen per cent and the only piece that carries the collaborative learning outcome, which is why it takes this form rather than the form of a presentation. You put yourself into a group of three through a sign-up activity, settle on one media form between you, and record the three of you working out what the present landscape would look like had that form never come into being.

What the group hands in is a single cut of five to six minutes carrying the best of a much longer conversation, with every member properly represented in it. Monash expects you to prepare and then requires the exchange itself to be unrehearsed, and gives the ratio: 45 to 60 minutes of conversation should yield the five or six minutes submitted.

The published rubric has four criteria, and two of them are about the conversation rather than the argument, so a scripted video that would read well on paper is capped on half the marking.

What this chapter covers

  • 01

The specification: three people, one media form, a counterfactual prompt, an edited video

  • 02

The group self selection window, and the expectation of meeting in person

  • 03

Prepare, but do not perform a script: how the two instructions fit together

  • 04

The compression ratio, and why the first ten minutes are unusable

  • 05

Four published criteria, and the two that reward the conversation itself

  • 06

Criterion B: considering, responding, and modifying a position on camera

  • 07

Belbin's group roles and Tuckman's team development, taught inside the unit

  • 08

Editing to a shape: question, disagreement, mechanism, movement, conclusion

Design a discussion that can earn criterion B

Q [3 marks]. Your group has chosen television. Plan the preparation so that responding and modifying positions can actually happen on camera. The mark allocation is our own practice weighting, not a University mark scheme.
  • 1Split the position deliberately before meeting. One member prepares the case that removing broadcast television changes streaming fundamentally, another the case that streaming would have arrived at the same characteristics independently.
  • 1Give each side a mechanism rather than an opinion, so there is something specific to concede. Scheduling and flow on one side, subscription economics and catalogue search on the other.
  • 1Agree in advance to say aloud when a point lands. Naming the moment makes it findable in an hour of footage and makes the modification visible to a marker who sees only six minutes.
Preparation should manufacture a genuine disagreement with named mechanisms on both sides, because the criterion rewards considering points of agreement and disagreement, responding to them, and modifying a position in light of what another member said. None of that can be added in the edit, so it has to be designed into the conversation before the camera is running.
Sia tip — Mark the timecode aloud whenever someone changes their mind. It costs nothing during the discussion and it is the difference between finding that moment and submitting the first six minutes.
Glossary

Key terms

Spontaneous discussion
A conversation prepared for in advance but never written out. The unit expects reading and thinking in advance while requiring that the exchange itself be unrehearsed, because two of the four criteria assess how participants respond to one another.
Group roles
The distinct functions members take within a team, covered in the unit's own lesson through Belbin's model alongside Tuckman's stages of team development and the key elements of effective groups.
FAQ

The Group Video Discussion FAQ

Does the video have to be technically polished?

No. What is marked is how good the conversation is, not the camerawork or the cutting, and the only production requirement stated is that voices can be clearly heard. Time spent on production is time not spent on the conversation, and the rubric pays for the conversation.

We all agree about our media form. Is that a problem?

For one whole criterion, yes. The bands above a pass for group interactions require considering points of agreement and disagreement, responding to them, and modifying a position in light of another member's point. Complete agreement leaves nothing to demonstrate, so build the disagreement deliberately by assigning someone the case that little would change.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Treat this as a project with a rehearsal rather than a deliverable with a deadline. Form the group inside the self selection window, because a group that forms late loses time to administration rather than to study.

Read the unit's own group work lesson early, particularly the stages of team development, since it predicts that a group has to pass through an unsettled phase before it performs and a group that films in its first half hour is filming that phase.

Choose a media form whose removal changes something structural, and use chapters 4 to 6 for ready mechanisms: indiscriminate delivery, free duplication, and value extracted from flows. Talk for the full 45 to 60 minutes even after the prepared points run out, because the usable material is what comes afterwards.

Edit to a shape rather than to a length, and check that every member presses submit even though only one file is required.
