Problem Definition and Exploratory Evidence

Problem definition separates the action a manager is considering from the information needed to choose responsibly. The chapter follows the research process from context diagnosis and problem components to questions, variables and an exploratory evidence plan.

It treats qualitative and secondary evidence as tools for discovering mechanisms, vocabulary and rival explanations, while keeping prevalence and causal claims for designs that can support them.

Why is the manager's action request not yet a research problem?

An action request already points toward what the manager might do, while research must identify what information would distinguish competing explanations and reduce uncertainty. Translation prevents a preferred action from deciding the questions and evidence in advance.

What can exploratory interviews establish?

They can reveal experiences, language, mechanisms, contrasts and unexpected concepts that refine later questions and measures. They do not estimate how common each theme is across the population unless a later sampling and measurement design supports that claim.

How should secondary data be evaluated?

Inspect methodology, error, currency, original objective, variable definitions, coverage, aggregation and dependability. State the inference the source supports for its population and period, then identify the question that remains unanswered.

Practise translating short managerial prompts into broad research problems and components without assuming the proposed action is correct. For each component, write one descriptive, comparative or relational question and identify the population and variables. Build a method comparison that explains when focus groups, depth interviews and secondary evidence contribute.

Finish every exploratory answer with an inference boundary: what the evidence can reveal, what it cannot estimate and which later design would answer the remaining decision question. Build a weekly translation deck from new situations. On the front, write only the manager's action request.

On the back, write the symptom, at least three rival explanations, a broad information problem, bounded components and the evidence that could distinguish them. Reject any answer in which every possible finding still recommends the manager's preferred action.

For qualitative practice, compare focus groups, depth interviews, laddering and indirect prompts by the interaction they create, the insight they can reveal and the bias they may introduce. Write a moderator opening that invites experience before categories, then add probes that recover episodes and decision mechanisms without leading.

Analyse a short invented transcript by coding a dominant theme and a negative case, and state how each would alter a later questionnaire or hypothesis. For secondary evidence, use a six-part audit: methodology, error, currency, original objective, variable nature and dependability. Always write the eligible population, period, numerator and denominator before comparing sources.

When two results disagree, propose at least two design reasons before choosing an explanation. Finish a revision session by drafting a proposal traceability table from research question through construct, indicator, source, sample and analysis. Blank cells identify the next design task. Extra measures with no question should be removed.

Read the completed chain backward from recommendation to raw evidence; if a link relies on an assumption, label it and decide whether exploratory evidence, descriptive measurement or a causal test is needed. This routine turns terminology into an auditable decision plan. Finish by testing the problem against two counterfactual findings: one supporting the manager preferred action and one challenging it.

If the evidence cannot distinguish them, refine the component, population or measure. State the narrowest conclusion each source supports before combining evidence. This keeps the proposal responsive to results rather than committed to an action in advance, and it makes the next research step specific.
