Defining Disease and the Body's Response

Five headings, written down before anything else

Week 1 asks students to account for a disease under five fixed headings, from what caused it through to how the next case is avoided, and to define and use common veterinary terms.

That frame is the organising device for the whole subject: the bacteriology, virology and parasitology weeks supply causes, the diagnostics week supplies tests, and the immunology week explains why an animal looks the way it does while all of that is happening.

Deciding whether this is disease at all

Before identifying a disease, the lecture asks three questions in order: is this disease, given that environment, stress and anxiety produce similar signs; is it serious, meaning what it does to quality of life now and later; and can it wait hours or days.

Signs are identified from the record and from the animal, and the physical examination runs in a fixed head to tail order so that nothing is skipped under time pressure.

Reference values for temperature, heart rate and breathing rate differ by species, and temperature carries thresholds rather than a single normal.

The disease and the response arrive together

What is seen in a sick animal combines the disease process, which damages tissue physically, physiologically, chemically or immunologically, with the animal's own response of inflammation, immune stimulation, systemic change and healing.

Inflammation runs as an immediate fluid-based phase over seconds to days and a delayed cellular phase over days to weeks, ending in resolution or in one of several named alternatives.

Wound healing runs through fluid, granulation and scar stages, with the first twelve hours doing disproportionate work.

Working a problem in a group of animals

The field half of the week supplies a sequence for a reported mob problem: establish there is an issue, prepare, build a differential diagnosis, describe the outbreak, evaluate the diagnosis, implement control and prevention, and communicate.

The habits it trains are naming the body systems involved before naming a disease, and remembering that common problems occur commonly.

Deciding whether a raised temperature is a finding

Q [3 marks]. AskSia assigns three practice points to this independent exercise; they are not a University marking scheme. A four-year-old horse reads 40.1 degrees Celsius after six hours on a truck on a hot day. State what the reading establishes, what it does not, and what you would do next.

The horse reference figure is 38.0 degrees, so 40.1 is about two degrees above it, which is the size of rise the subject associates with a significant reaction or tissue damage. It does not establish that disease is the cause: environmental temperature, transport stress, anxiety and pain all raise temperature and all four apply to an animal that has just been trucked in heat. The next step is to rest the animal out of the heat and repeat the measurement alongside heart rate and breathing rate before treating. A reading that falls with rest and one that does not are different problems, and the repeat is what separates them.

Pyrexia
A true fever, which in severe disease can progress to hypothermia rather than continuing to rise.
Granulation tissue
The vascular, fibroblast-rich tissue formed during the delayed phase of inflammation and the healing of a wound.
Capillary refill time
The interval for colour to return to a mucous membrane after pressure, used as a rapid indicator of perfusion and hydration.
Body condition score
A graded assessment of fat and muscle cover used to compare animals within a group and to track an individual over time.
Differential diagnosis
The set of conditions that could produce the observed findings, held open until evidence removes members from it.

What are the five headings used to describe a disease in this subject?

Cause, signs, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The subject uses them from week 1 onwards and does not replace them, so they double as a completeness check: an account that covers cause and signs at length while leaving prevention empty has not used the frame rather than failed to know the material.

Why does the lecture ask whether something is disease before asking which disease it is?

Because signs that look alarming are routinely produced by things that are not disease. A change of environment, transport, handling, heat and anxiety all move temperature, heart rate and behaviour, so a finding has to be separated from its context before it can be attributed to a pathogen.

What is the difference between the immediate and delayed phases of inflammation?

The immediate phase runs over seconds to days and is built out of fluid: mediators are released, vessels dilate, capillaries leak, and protein, antibody and white cells enter the tissue. The delayed phase runs over days to weeks and is built out of cells: capillaries grow in, fibroblasts migrate, collagen is produced and granulation tissue forms.

Does a group problem get investigated the same way as an individual case?

No. Once a proportion of a mob is affected, the unit of interest becomes the group and the question becomes what the animals share, usually a paddock, a feed, a water source or a management event. The subject supplies a seven-step sequence for that situation, ending in control, prevention and communication.

Learn the five headings and the seven investigation steps as lists you can write from memory, because both are cheap marks and both structure longer answers. For the reference values, learn the pattern rather than every number: know which species sits highest and lowest for each measurement, and learn the two temperature thresholds exactly.

When practising, write the phase of inflammation before describing it, since most lost marks here come from describing the right mechanism under the wrong heading.
