Models of Science Communication

Define deficit model

The course material gives this chapter a concrete anchor: Week 4 examines why deficit assumptions persist in science communication.

That deficit model anchor controls how dialogue model is explained and how participation model is tested in changed practice.

Models of Science Communication asks how deficit model, dialogue model and participation model change the interpretation of a text, case, institution or public problem.

The chapter's practical task is to compare deficit, dialogue and participation models; that requires an argument, not a list of themes.

Define deficit model at the scale of the chosen case. Identify who uses the category, what it makes visible and what it may conceal.

This prevents the deficit model definition from floating above the evidence as an interchangeable opening paragraph.

Trace dialogue model

Use dialogue model to explain the relationship between the case and the claim.

Quote, describe or compare only the evidence that advances dialogue model, and make the inferential step visible instead of assuming the example speaks for itself.

Bring participation model in as a second lens or consequence. The participation model reading may deepen the first account, expose a conflict or show why another audience would interpret the same material differently.

The comparison should change the conclusion, not simply add another term.

To compare deficit, dialogue and participation models, build each paragraph around one contested move: claim, specific evidence, explanation and qualification.

A participation model counter-reading is strongest when it identifies exactly which premise or piece of evidence it changes.

Test with participation model

Make an evidence table for deficit model with four columns: passage, image, event or institutional fact; the concept it activates; the inference drawn; and a plausible competing reading.

Place deficit model and dialogue model in separate rows before combining them. This keeps dialogue model interpretation anchored in specific material and shows where disagreement enters the argument.

Test the scale of every claim. A detail involving deficit model may support an argument about one text, group or moment without supporting a claim about an entire culture or institution.

Use participation model to decide whether the evidence should be widened, narrowed or compared with a counter-case before the paragraph reaches its conclusion.

For timed revision in HPSC90012, write a one-sentence thesis for the application — compare deficit, dialogue and participation models — then list the minimum evidence needed to defend it.

Add one participation model objection that would matter if true and revise the thesis so it survives.

The exercise trains participation model argument selection and qualification rather than a memorised inventory of course terms.

Transfer to Models of Science Communication

A complete response should make the task visible before the detail: identify what must be decided, define the relevant terms, connect the evidence to dialogue model, and use participation model to test the result.

The final sentence about participation model should answer the question actually asked rather than merely repeat the topic.

The controlling limit is specific: more participation does not automatically resolve unequal power or technical uncertainty.

Keep that participation model limit beside the worked example, because it separates a careful HPSC90012 answer from one that sounds confident but claims more than the task or evidence supports.

For revision, retrieve deficit model, dialogue model and participation model without notes, explain their relationship aloud, then complete a changed version of the application: compare deficit, dialogue and participation models.

Record the first failed dialogue model reasoning move and repair it before attempting another case.

Redesign a public forum

Q [4 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. An agency plans a lecture after residents contest both evidence and distribution of risk. The mark allocation shown here is a study aid created for this example, not a University assessment scheme.
  • 1Separate information gaps from value conflict.
  • 1Map local knowledge.
  • 1Choose dialogue and decision roles.
  • 1Define how input changes action.
A lecture may address facts but cannot resolve distributive concerns; the forum needs reciprocal evidence exchange and a transparent route from participation to decision.
Sia tip — Communication design follows the kind of disagreement.
Glossary

Key terms

Deficit model
Communication model treating public disagreement primarily as a lack of scientific information. This chapter uses the concept when students compare deficit, dialogue and participation models. Use this definition when the task is to compare deficit, dialogue and participation models.
Dialogue model
Two-way engagement in which publics and experts exchange perspectives and knowledge. It helps explain the reasoning required to compare deficit, dialogue and participation models. Use this definition when the task is to compare deficit, dialogue and participation models.
Participation model
Approach giving affected publics a role in framing or making decisions. Its limit matters because more participation does not automatically resolve unequal power or technical uncertainty. Use this definition when the task is to compare deficit, dialogue and participation models.
FAQ

Models of Science Communication FAQ

Which common basis lets a student compare deficit, dialogue and participation models?

Compare deficit, dialogue and participation models. Week 4 examines why deficit assumptions persist in science communication. Communication model treating public disagreement primarily as a lack of scientific information. This chapter uses the concept when students compare deficit, dialogue and participation models.

Does more participation automatically resolve unequal power or technical uncertainty?

More participation does not automatically resolve unequal power or technical uncertainty. Two-way engagement in which publics and experts exchange perspectives and knowledge. It helps explain the reasoning required to compare deficit, dialogue and participation models.

If the dispute from factual misunderstanding to conflicting values changed, how should a student reassess the model?

A lecture may address facts but cannot resolve distributive concerns; the forum needs reciprocal evidence exchange and a transparent route from participation to decision. More participation does not automatically resolve unequal power or technical uncertainty.
