Simulation Decisions and Case Analysis

The simulation creates a repeated learning cycle under budget and labour-market constraints. This chapter shows how to record goals, assumptions, linked HR decisions, expected mechanisms and observed results before adjusting the next round. It then converts that habit into a case-response chain: diagnose, select evidence, explain the mechanism, weigh an alternative, recommend and specify evidence for learning.

The decision ledger protects the original rationale from hindsight and helps distinguish a mistaken assumption from poor implementation or external change. Because hiring, pay, development and performance choices interact, disappointing results should not trigger random reversals of the most visible action.

The case method uses the same discipline: selective theory, explicit causal reasoning and a conditional but decisive management commitment.

Evaluate a reactive hiring freeze

Q [5 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. A growing simulated firm misses a profit target, freezes hiring and then experiences service delays. Evaluate the decision process. These marks are not a University assessment scheme.

  • 1Explain that the team reacted to a lagging result without diagnosing the mechanism.
  • 1Inspect staffing, capability, absence, productivity and demand before attributing excess cost.
  • 2Protect critical hiring while adjusting lower-priority roles or deployment where evidence supports it.
  • 1Review cost and service together and record the next-round assumption.
The hiring freeze may reduce immediate cost but can transfer damage into service when capacity is already constrained. The team should diagnose staffing and demand, then protect critical hiring or improve deployment while adjusting lower-priority spend. Recording the expectation and reviewing both cost and service turns the next round into evidence rather than another reaction.
Sia tip — Draw an arrow between every theory sentence and a case fact. Delete any concept that does not change the diagnosis, trade-off or action.
Glossary

Key terms

Decision Ledger
A decision ledger records the goal, assumption, action, expected result, observed pattern and next adjustment.
Decision Bundle
A decision bundle is a set of connected HR choices whose combined effects must be interpreted together.
Case Diagnosis
Case diagnosis is the reasoned identification of the strategic issue and people-system mechanism causing it.
Review Condition
A review condition is the evidence or event that triggers continuation, modification or reversal of a decision.
FAQ

Simulation Decisions and Case Analysis FAQ

Why keep a simulation decision ledger?

It preserves the original rationale so later results can test an assumption rather than be rewritten by hindsight. It also helps separate a poor decision from weak implementation or external change.

How many theories should a case answer use?

Use the fewest concepts needed to explain the decision completely. A model belongs only when it changes the diagnosis, comparison, recommendation or supporting evidence plan.

What should the final case paragraph contain?

State the action, owner, implementation boundary, early evidence, later outcome and condition for adjustment. This converts a recommendation into an accountable, reviewable management commitment for leaders.

Why record assumptions before a simulation result arrives?

A contemporaneous ledger prevents hindsight from rewriting the original logic. It lets a team ask whether an assumption was wrong, implementation was incomplete or the environment changed, which produces a more useful adjustment than simply copying the latest successful competitor.

How should a team adjust one simulation decision?

Change the lever connected to the diagnosed mechanism, preserve other choices where possible and state the expected leading signal. Altering everything at once may improve a result, but it prevents the team from learning which decision actually mattered.

What makes a case conclusion appropriately conditional?

The conclusion commits to an action while naming the assumption or evidence that would justify revision. This is stronger than indecision because ownership and timing remain explicit, yet the recommendation can respond if the causal story proves incomplete.

How should a team interpret an unexpected simulation result?

Return to the predicted mechanism before changing direction. Check implementation, delayed effects, competitor moves and external conditions, then revise the smallest assumption that the evidence genuinely challenges.

Study strategy

Exam move

Maintain a compact decision ledger for each simulation round and use it to explain adjustment rather than merely report results. For exam practice, assign paragraph roles: strategic issue and diagnosis, mechanism with evidence, comparison and trade-off, then action and evaluation. Remove theory that lacks a case fact. Make the conclusion conditional but decisive by stating what evidence would change the recommendation.

Reconstruct one simulation round without looking at the later result and write the outcome you expected from each major decision. Then reveal the result and classify the gap as assumption, implementation, interaction or external change. Limit the next adjustment to the decision most closely linked to that diagnosis and predict both benefit and side effect.

For written cases, practise a five-sentence skeleton before expanding: issue, evidence, mechanism, trade-off and action with measure. Add theory only where it sharpens one sentence. Compare your preferred response with a credible alternative rather than an obviously poor option. In the final paragraph, name the owner, scope, early indicator, later outcome and review condition so that the recommendation becomes executable.
