Industry Positioning and Generic Strategy

Define competitive position

The course material gives this chapter a concrete anchor: Week 3 applies strategic positioning to a current case. That competitive position anchor controls how generic strategy is explained and how strategic fit is tested in changed practice.

Industry Positioning and Generic Strategy frames a decision through competitive position, generic strategy and strategic fit.

The objective is to connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy, so the chapter should be read as a chain from problem definition to evidence, option comparison and accountable action.

Start with competitive position and name the decision owner, affected stakeholders and time horizon.

The same competitive position fact can matter differently across those positions, so the opening frame determines which evidence is relevant.

Use generic strategy to explain how the present condition produces an opportunity, cost or risk.

A strong generic strategy mechanism states what changes, for whom and through which organisational, market or institutional process.

Trace generic strategy

Apply strategic fit when comparing options. Keep the strategic fit criteria distinct, test trade-offs and ask which assumption drives the recommendation.

A score or matrix helps only when its criteria are justified by the case.

For the application — connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy — finish with an actor, action, rationale and review trigger. This turns the strategic fit analysis into a recommendation while keeping the decision open to new evidence.

Build a decision ledger.

Separate the current condition, the stakeholder affected, the evidence supporting competitive position, the mechanism represented by generic strategy and the criterion supplied by strategic fit. If a strategic fit recommendation cannot point back to one of those entries, it is probably preference dressed as analysis rather than a consequence of the case.

Compare at least two feasible options against the same criteria.

State who benefits under strategic fit, who bears cost or risk, what capability implementation requires and what evidence would reveal failure.

This comparison is essential when students need to connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy, because an attractive option is not defensible until its trade-offs are visible.

Test with strategic fit

Rehearse the MGMT90146 competitive position response as a short briefing: one sentence for the decision, two for the evidence and mechanism, one for the alternative and one for the qualified recommendation.

Then expand only the generic strategy move that needs more support. This protects the argument structure under a strict word or time limit.

A complete response should make the task visible before the detail: identify what must be decided, define the relevant terms, connect the evidence to generic strategy, and use strategic fit to test the result.

The final sentence about strategic fit should answer the question actually asked rather than merely repeat the topic.

The controlling limit is specific: mixing labels does not create a hybrid unless the activity system can support both.

Keep that strategic fit limit beside the worked example, because it separates a careful MGMT90146 answer from one that sounds confident but claims more than the task or evidence supports.

For revision, retrieve competitive position, generic strategy and strategic fit without notes, explain their relationship aloud, then complete a changed version of the application: connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy.

Record the first failed generic strategy reasoning move and repair it before attempting another case.

  • 1Define the case-specific object and objective.
  • 1Trace the main mechanism using the evidence supplied.
  • 1Test a plausible alternative or changed condition.
  • 1State a qualified action or interpretation.
Test whether the new service compromises turnover, standardisation and cost advantages, then decide whether a separate activity system or revised position is needed.
Sia tip — Analyse activities before naming the generic strategy.
Glossary

Key terms

Competitive position
Relative place created by customer value, cost structure and differentiated activities. This chapter uses the concept when students connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy. Use this definition when the task is to connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy.
Generic strategy
Broad route to advantage through cost leadership, differentiation or focus. It helps explain the reasoning required to connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy. Use this definition when the task is to connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy.
Strategic fit
Mutual reinforcement among activities supporting the chosen position. Its limit matters because mixing labels does not create a hybrid unless the activity system can support both. Use this definition when the task is to connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy.
FAQ

Industry Positioning and Generic Strategy FAQ

Which links need evidence when students connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy?

Connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy. Week 3 applies strategic positioning to a current case. Relative place created by customer value, cost structure and differentiated activities. This chapter uses the concept when students connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy.

Does mixing labels create a hybrid unless the activity system can support both?

Mixing labels does not create a hybrid unless the activity system can support both. Broad route to advantage through cost leadership, differentiation or focus. It helps explain the reasoning required to connect customer value, scope and activities to a defensible generic strategy.

If the target segment changed, how should a student revise activities?

Test whether the new service compromises turnover, standardisation and cost advantages, then decide whether a separate activity system or revised position is needed. Mixing labels does not create a hybrid unless the activity system can support both.
