Sales Force, Pipelines and Distribution

Sales and channel metrics connect capacity, opportunity progression and product availability. This chapter calculates workload, territory goals, effectiveness, compensation, weighted pipeline value and sales velocity, then compares numeric, ACV and PCV distribution.

It also adds out-of-stocks, on-time delivery, inventory turnover and sales per square foot so a manager can distinguish weak demand, insufficient coverage, poor conversion and channel execution failures.

Value a sales pipeline

  • 1Early-stage value is 10 multiplied by 20,000 and 20%.
  • 1The result is 40,000 dollars.
  • 1Proposal value is 6 multiplied by 30,000 and 50%, or 90,000 dollars.
  • 1Total weighted pipeline is 130,000 dollars.
Weighted pipeline value is 130,000 dollars.
Sia tip — Apply probability to each deal or stage before summing; weighted value is a forecast, not recognised revenue.
Glossary

Key terms

Sales Velocity
Opportunity count times average deal size and win rate, divided by sales-cycle length.
ACV Distribution
The share of all-outlet sales represented by outlets carrying the brand.
PCV Distribution
The share of category sales represented by outlets carrying the brand.
FAQ

Sales Force, Pipelines and Distribution FAQ

What is the difference between pipeline value and sales velocity?

Weighted pipeline applies stage probabilities to deal values at a point in time. Sales velocity combines opportunity count, deal size, win rate and cycle length into a value-per-time diagnostic. Both depend on clean stages and compatible definitions.

Why can ACV exceed numeric distribution?

Numeric distribution treats each outlet equally, while ACV weights outlets by their total sales. A brand can appear in relatively few outlets that are commercially large, producing low numeric coverage but high ACV coverage.

Does faster inventory turnover always mean better performance?

Not necessarily. Faster turnover reduces cash tied in inventory, but an extreme value can accompany stockouts and lost availability. Pair turnover and inventory days with out-of-stocks, delivery reliability and customer demand before judging channel health.

Why should weighted pipeline include expected timing?

A large risk-adjusted pipeline may consist of opportunities expected after the current target period. Combine value with close dates, stage ageing and capacity so future deals are not treated as coverage for an immediate shortfall.

Study strategy

Exam move

Draw the chain from workload to opportunity, conversion, distribution and on-shelf availability. Calculate weighted pipeline and velocity with units, then explain which input changed. Compare numeric, ACV and PCV using one fictional outlet set. Always distinguish listed from available and pair inventory efficiency with service outcomes. Begin with capacity.

Translate account counts, call frequency, time per call and available selling time into a workload requirement. Keep visits, hours and salespeople visible as units so an annual requirement is not divided by a monthly capacity. If a scenario includes non-selling time, adjust the available capacity before setting territory goals.

Then ask whether the target reflects controllable effort, achieved sales or both; activity alone cannot demonstrate sales effectiveness. For the pipeline, draw the stages and assign each opportunity a value, stage probability and expected close date. Weighted pipeline is a risk-adjusted snapshot, not guaranteed revenue.

Recalculate it after changing one probability, then calculate sales velocity from opportunity count, average deal value, win rate and cycle length. Preserve the time unit in velocity. A faster cycle can raise velocity even if deal size is unchanged, while a larger pipeline can coexist with weak conversion or stale opportunities. Use stage ageing and loss reasons to diagnose the difference.

Build a fictional outlet table with store count, category sales, product-category sales, listing status and actual availability. Calculate numeric distribution, ACV and PCV from the same outlets. Explain why high sales-weighted distribution can accompany low numeric coverage when the brand is concentrated in large stores.

Then separate listed from in-stock: a product may count toward distribution yet be unavailable to shoppers because of replenishment or execution failure. Pair coverage with out-of-stock rate and on-time delivery. Add the inventory bridge. Compute turnover or days using compatible cost or inventory bases, and predict the tradeoff before interpreting a high value.

Fast turnover can release cash, but it can also reflect insufficient inventory when stockouts and service failures rise. Sales per square foot or metre needs a consistent area definition and should be read with margin and assortment role. A channel answer should identify whether the constraint is demand, coverage, conversion, availability or inventory policy.

For exam practice, label every rate with its base and every velocity with its time unit. Reconcile totals from opportunity to closed sales and from listed outlets to shopper availability. Keep an error log for probabilities treated as certainty, mismatched periods, numeric and weighted distribution confused, and turnover praised without service evidence.

End each scenario with one targeted action, such as reallocating capacity, cleaning stage probabilities, expanding priority outlets or fixing replenishment, and one measure that would confirm the action worked.
