Jobs to Be Done and Personas

Jobs to Be Done and personas answer different design questions. A job describes the progress a person seeks in a particular circumstance, including functional, emotional and social dimensions. It is stable enough to guide innovation without tying the need to one product.

A persona is a research-grounded composite that makes recurring goals, behaviours, constraints, channels and jobs easier to reason about as a connected pattern. This chapter shows how to write a contextual job, build a persona from repeated evidence, avoid invented biography and use both artefacts to make journey and service decisions.

AskSia practice weighting: connect a job and persona

Q [5 marks]. Commuters who arrive late collect takeaway dinners. They want to feed the household quickly, worry that collection delays will disappoint others and often text family members for substitutions. Write the job and show what belongs in a persona. These marks are not the University's official mark allocation.

  • 1Name the circumstance as arriving late and collecting a meal for other people.
  • 1State the functional progress as securing an acceptable dinner with little delay.
  • 1Add the emotional and social progress: reduce uncertainty and remain dependable to the household.
  • 1Put repeated behaviours, constraints and communication needs into the persona, not invented hobbies or income.
  • 1Translate the combined evidence into criteria such as visible readiness, fast substitution and shareable status.
In the late-arrival circumstance, the customer hires the collection service to secure a suitable household dinner quickly while preserving a sense of dependability. The persona should organise observed time pressure, coordination behaviour, substitution tolerance, channel use and uncertainty. It should not add decorative biography. The job supplies the progress; the persona supplies an evidence-based pattern of context and behaviour that affects how the journey should deliver it.
Sia tip — If the job names a product feature, rewrite it as progress. If the persona contains a detail that cannot change a design decision, remove or justify it.

FAQ

Jobs to Be Done and Personas FAQ

Is a job the same as a task?

No. A task is an action, such as collecting a meal or completing a form. A job describes the wider progress that makes the action meaningful in context. The job can include practical completion, emotional reassurance and a social role.

Why include emotional and social jobs?

A technically complete service can still fail when it creates anxiety, embarrassment or loss of control. Emotional and social dimensions explain why customers value visibility, reassurance, discretion or coordination even when the functional task appears simple.

How is a persona different from a segment?

A segment groups customers using selected variables for analysis or targeting. A persona organises recurring qualitative evidence into a usable pattern for design. A persona can draw on segment information, but it needs behaviours, context, goals, pains, channels and jobs that affect the experience.

Should a persona have a name and photograph?

A label can make the artefact usable, but it must not disguise weak evidence. Visual details should support comprehension and representation, not encourage stereotype. The strongest parts are the evidence-backed behaviours, goals, constraints, jobs and journey implications.

How many personas are needed?

Use the smallest set that captures materially different patterns relevant to the design challenge. Two personas are required in the group project described by the subject guide. Each should represent a coherent pattern and lead to meaningfully different journey needs or decisions.

How do jobs and personas work together?

The job keeps attention on progress in a circumstance. The persona shows how recurring context, behaviours and constraints shape the way that progress is pursued. Together they inform journey stages, pain points, opportunity criteria and prototype scenarios.

Study strategy

Exam move

Practise by taking one product-led claim and rewriting it as progress in a circumstance. Add functional, emotional and social dimensions only when the evidence supports them. Then inspect a persona and label every item as observation, synthesised pattern or assumption. Delete decorative details that cannot influence recruitment, journey mapping, a design criterion or a test scenario.

Compare two personas by asking which journey stage, channel, constraint or success measure changes. Finally, carry one job-persona pair into a current journey, a future journey and a prototype test. The chain should stay visible: research supports the pattern, the pattern explains the job, and the job shapes the design response.

Stress-test the pair with a second circumstance in which the same person may pursue different progress. This reveals whether the job is really a feature request and whether the persona has been mistaken for a fixed prediction of behaviour.
