Persons, Situations and Interactionism

Person explanations seek relatively stable differences across settings, while situation explanations seek contextual features that shift responses across people. Interactionism asks whether one of those effects changes across the other variable. The presence of both a person variable and a situation variable does not automatically imply interaction. Parallel changes can show separate main effects.

Interaction becomes central when a difference changes in size or direction across conditions. A crossed pattern is still descriptive and does not name its psychological mechanism without supporting evidence. Boundary conditions make theories more precise by stating when a tendency is expressed, strengthened or reversed. In exam questions, compare people within each setting and then compare settings within each person.

That two-comparison routine distinguishes stable rank-order differences, broad context effects and genuinely conditional patterns without relying on trigger words such as depends.

Diagnose a crossed error pattern

Q [3 marks]. In a clear task, Person A and Person B each make four checking errors. Under time pressure, A makes nine errors and B makes two. What pattern is most informative? The marks used here are not a published University marking scheme.
  • 1The person difference is zero in the clear task because both people make four errors.
  • 1Under pressure, A makes seven more errors than B, so the person difference changes across situations.
  • 1The crossed response pattern indicates a person by situation interaction, but it does not identify the responsible trait.
The effect of time pressure depends on the person, and the person difference depends on the task condition. That is an interaction pattern requiring further evidence about mechanism.
Sia tip — Compare people inside every setting, then compare settings inside every person. Interaction is a changing difference, not merely the presence of two variables.
Glossary

Key terms

Person effect
An average difference associated with people or personal characteristics across the situations being compared.
Situation effect
An average change associated with a context, cue or condition across the people being compared.
Statistical interaction
A pattern in which the effect of one variable changes across levels of another variable.
Boundary condition
A stated circumstance under which a relationship changes, weakens, reverses or no longer applies.
Parallel pattern
A response pattern in which group differences remain similar across conditions, suggesting limited interaction.
Crossed pattern
A response pattern in which the ordering or direction of differences reverses across conditions.
Mechanism
The process proposed to explain how or why an observed relationship or experimental effect occurs.
FAQ

Persons, Situations and Interactionism FAQ

Can person and situation effects occur together?

Yes. A stable person difference and a broad situation shift can both be present. They interact only when one difference changes across the other variable.

Do crossing lines prove a psychological mechanism?

No. Crossing lines describe an interaction pattern. The variable definitions, design and additional evidence are needed to identify the psychological process producing that observed pattern.

What do parallel lines usually indicate?

Parallel lines suggest that a condition changes both groups by a similar amount, so main effects may be present without a meaningful interaction between predictors.

Why are boundary conditions valuable?

They show when a claim is strongest or fails, allowing a theory to describe variation more precisely instead of promising one universal effect across all contexts.

How should an interaction vignette be read?

Compute or describe the difference between people in each setting, then the difference between settings for each person. Look for a changed comparison before choosing the interaction option.

Study strategy

Exam move

Create small two-by-two tables and practise stating both comparisons in words. Include additive examples, fan-shaped differences and reversals so that interaction does not become synonymous with crossed lines. For each pattern, distinguish the statistical description from the psychological mechanism. Rewrite everyday explanations in person, situation and interactionist forms, then state the evidence each version would require.

On multiple-choice questions, ignore the word depends until you have checked the actual comparison. End every answer with a boundary statement that explains where the conclusion applies and what would need to be measured to identify the process behind it. Build four number grids that produce parallel, spreading, converging and crossing lines.

Before sketching, calculate the person difference within each situation and the situation difference within each person. Say whether the comparison changes, not merely whether both predictors matter. Then attach two different psychological mechanisms to one identical interaction pattern to remind yourself that the graph does not identify a process.

During review, translate every phrase such as 'only under pressure' into an explicit conditional comparison. If the relevant difference is constant, relabel the pattern as additive even when the scenario mentions both a person characteristic and a context.
