PSYC20009 Chap.1 Social Psychology and Scientific Explanation
Social Psychology and Scientific Explanation
Social psychology examines how social and cognitive processes affect the way people perceive, influence and relate to others. The field studies individuals, dyads and groups while using scientific observation, hypothesis testing and revision.
Personality and social psychology share an interest in thought, feeling and action but usually foreground different explanatory sources: relatively stable personal differences or features of the social situation. Interactionism joins those perspectives by asking whether a context affects different people differently. Scientific explanation also requires three distinct validity checks.
Construct validity concerns whether a measure or manipulation represents its intended construct. Internal validity concerns whether a design supports the proposed causal inference. External validity concerns whether the result can generalise to the target people, places, times or settings.
These checks cannot substitute for one another, so the chapter trains you to identify the requested inference before choosing a familiar term.

Diagnose three validity concerns in one cooperation study
- 1Construct validity: message count may reflect confusion, sociability or task difficulty rather than cooperation itself.
- 1Internal validity: the causal claim depends on assignment and whether every condition except the instructions was controlled.
- 1External validity: volunteers completing one task do not establish that the effect applies in every workplace.
Key terms
- Social psychology
- The scientific study of how social and cognitive processes affect how people perceive, influence and relate to real or imagined others.
- Level of analysis
- The unit at which an explanation is framed, such as an individual, a relationship between two people or a group.
- Interactionism
- An approach that explains a response through the joint configuration of personal characteristics and situational features.
- Operational definition
- The concrete procedure, manipulation or measure used to represent an abstract construct in a study.
- Construct validity
- The degree to which an operation represents the intended theoretical construct rather than another process.
- Internal validity
- The strength of the evidence that a proposed cause produced an observed difference rather than a confound.
- External validity
- The extent to which a result can be generalised to the people, settings, times or situations of interest.
Social Psychology and Scientific Explanation FAQ
What makes an explanation social psychological?
It explains perception, influence or relations through social and cognitive processes at an appropriate level of analysis. Another person can matter even when they are remembered, imagined or represented by a norm.
How do personality and social explanations differ?
Personality explanations usually foreground stable differences across situations, whereas social explanations foreground contextual influence across people. Most contemporary accounts allow thoughts and actions to reflect both sources together.
When is an interaction explanation needed?
An interaction is needed when the size or direction of a situation effect changes across people, or when a person difference changes across settings. Two variables can have separate effects without interacting.
Why is realism not the same as validity?
A realistic setting may still contain confounds or poor measures, while an artificial task can isolate a causal contrast carefully. Validity depends on the specific representation, inference or generalisation question.
How should a validity question be answered?
Name the checkpoint, identify the mismatch and state how it limits the conclusion. Avoid saying only that a study is weak, because each validity category concerns a different scientific problem.
Exam move
Make a three-column validity table and add one original study problem to each column. For person-situation questions, compare responses within every setting and compare settings within every person. Practise rewriting broad claims into testable ones by naming the construct, operation, comparison and target population.
During multiple-choice revision, cover the options and decide whether the stem asks what was measured, what caused a difference or where a result applies. Then reject choices that answer another checkpoint. Finish each practice session by explaining one tempting distractor in a complete sentence. That final contrast builds the boundary knowledge needed for unfamiliar exam wording.
Add a weekly retrieval drill: invent a social claim, define the construct without circular wording, choose an operation, name the comparison that could test it and write one conclusion the design would not justify. On a second pass, change only the sample or setting and decide whether the main concern shifts from construct validity to external validity. Keep a correction log organised by inference error, not lecture title.
A note such as 'confused realism with causal control' is more reusable than simply recording the question number. Revisit the same error with a fresh scenario two days later.
