MGTS7527 Chap.12 Standards, PMBOK and Delivery Approaches
Standards, PMBOK and Delivery Approaches
A shared language that must be tailored
The last part of Week 2 explains why the profession uses standards: they give common terminology, shared principles, recognised practices and consistency across organisations.
The Project Management Institute describes a standard as a document, agreed by consensus, to be used again and again, and the course insists that every standard still has to be interpreted for its context.
PMBOK, ISO and the professional bodies
The eighth edition of the PMBOK Guide connects projects with value, emphasises adaptability and accountability, and contains principles, performance domains and practical guidance.
The ISO 21500 family covers context and concepts, practice guidance and governance in separate standards. This chapter compares the two and introduces PMI, IPMA, APM and AIPM, then sets out what standards can and cannot do.
Choosing a delivery approach
Week 7 compares agile frameworks with the PMBOK framework and asks which suits a given industry.
The chapter grounds that comparison in the predictive, adaptive and hybrid language the course uses from Week 3: how much planning happens up front, how scheduling, quality and task assignment change with the approach, and how to recommend one for a mixed programme.
Answering an approach question
A strong answer about methodology starts from the project rather than the method.
Say what is known and unknown about the requirements, how regulated the work is and how much can be delivered in increments, then recommend predictive, adaptive or hybrid delivery and name the controls that the choice keeps or changes.

Predictive, adaptive and hybrid delivery
Worked example · free
Match predictive, adaptive or hybrid delivery to three projects
- 1(a) Predictive: requirements are fixed early and the work is sequential, so detailed planning up front pays off.
- 1(b) Adaptive: needs are uncertain, so short planning and delivery cycles with frequent feedback reduce waste.
- 1(c) Hybrid: formal controls for the regulated reporting, iterative delivery for the features users will shape.
Key terms
- Standard
- A document agreed by consensus that sets out rules, guidelines or characteristics to be used repeatedly.
- Body of Knowledge
- An organised map of what a profession needs to know.
- Certification
- Recognition that an individual has shown specified knowledge, experience or competence.
- Hybrid Approach
- Delivery that plans some work predictively and develops uncertain work iteratively.
Standards, PMBOK and Delivery Approaches FAQ
What is the difference between PMBOK and ISO 21500?
The PMBOK Guide is PMI's professional standard and body of knowledge, with principles, performance domains, practices and tools tied to PMI certification. The ISO 21500 family is a set of international consensus standards giving high-level concepts and guidance across countries and organisations.
Which professional body is Australia's national peak body for project management?
The Australian Institute of Project Management. It offers RegPM certification, professional development, advocacy and a professional community, alongside the international bodies PMI and IPMA and the chartered UK body APM.
Do standards tell a project manager exactly what to do?
No. The course's view is that standards provide reference points that must be interpreted and tailored to the project's context. They cannot cover every situation, certification does not remove the need for judgement, and over-compliance can create bureaucracy.
What do professional bodies do for project managers?
They develop knowledge through standards, bodies of knowledge and research; recognise capability through certification and competence assessment; support ethical conduct through codes of ethics and guidance; and develop practitioners through training, mentoring and conferences. Together these make project management a recognised profession.
Assessment move
Make a two-column card comparing PMI's PMBOK Guide with the ISO 21500 family on who develops it, what kind of document it is and what it contains. Then take three projects of your own and justify predictive, adaptive or hybrid delivery for each in one sentence. Add one line on a limit of standards that your recommendation has to work around.
