Digital Tools, Media and Transformation

Digital transformation is an analytical claim about changed relations, not a synonym for putting an existing object into a file. A scan may digitise an image while leaving its production logic, audience route and institutional role largely intact. A programmable work can instead make variability, real-time processing or participation constitutive of what the work does.

The distinction should be demonstrated through the case: identify the input, rule, transformation and perceivable consequence. The Week 2 materials also resist treating digital aesthetics as a detached visual style. Artworks remain material arrangements of screens, speakers, sensors, networks, bodies, rooms and maintenance.

Software does not replace materiality; it redistributes it across code, hardware, electricity, standards and labour. A careful answer therefore compares continuity with transformation. It asks which older form, convention or encounter persists, which process becomes computational, who can act and what new uncertainty or dependency enters the aesthetic event.

Repeat the diagram for a non-digital comparison, then annotate continuities before listing novelty. Inspect the work at two times or with two inputs so variability is observed rather than assumed.

Keep a failure record as well: latency, broken links, inaccessible sensors and maintenance decisions can reveal the material conditions hidden by a seamless interface. Draft one paragraph beginning with the sensory encounter and another beginning with the infrastructure; combine them only after each makes a clear claim.

Before submitting, replace broad words such as innovative, immersive or interactive with a named mechanism and consequence. Verify current assessment and AI instructions in Canvas, and preserve screenshots or notes that establish what the work actually did when you encountered it.

Add a continuity test before accepting any transformation claim: remove the digital operation in a thought experiment and predict which artistic relation would remain. Keep versions of the system diagram after each observation so revisions are based on evidence rather than hindsight. When a tool fails, distinguish an accidental interruption from a failure the artist deliberately incorporates into the work’s aesthetic logic.
