Scientific Investigation and Communication

This chapter turns the unit's inquiry and communication outcomes into a repeatable method. It separates hypothesis from prediction, identifies the experimental unit and distinguishes biological from technical replication. Data displays must match the variables and show units, while results describe observations before discussion supplies mechanism.

The final writing audit checks whether limitations change interpretation and whether improvements directly repair the design problem identified. A research question defines the relationship or pattern of interest. A hypothesis supplies a testable biological explanation, and a prediction states what should be observed under specified conditions if that explanation is supported.

These parts should not collapse into a statement that the treatment will work. The design must create a comparison capable of being inconsistent with the hypothesis. Operational definitions turn broad ideas into measurements. Plant growth could mean height, leaf area or dry mass; microbial abundance could mean CFU, cell count or DNA signal. The choice changes what the result can mean.

The independent variable forms the comparison, the dependent variable records response and controlled variables reduce alternatives. A confound changes alongside the factor of interest and therefore prevents a clean attribution. The experimental unit is the independent entity assigned to a treatment. Repeated measurements of one unit can improve precision but do not create additional biological replicates.

Random assignment can balance unknown differences among treatments, while random sampling addresses representation of the target population. Blinding can reduce observer influence when measurement involves judgement. Graph choice should follow variable type and question.

Axes need names and units, individual observations or distributions should be visible where appropriate, and captions must identify what was measured and compared. Error bars must be defined because standard deviation and standard error communicate different quantities. Their visual overlap is not a universal significance test. Results writing starts with observation.

State the response, direction, magnitude, comparison and time point, then report the appropriate analysis. Discussion writing interprets the pattern through a biological mechanism, compares evidence, considers alternatives and returns to the hypothesis. A useful limitation names the source of uncertainty, its possible direction and a design change that would address it. Scientific integrity includes accurate representation.

Do not remove observations without a pre-defined reason, distort axes, hide conflicting evidence or present a generated explanation as direct observation. Paraphrase sources through your own reasoning, cite them as required and follow the AI rule attached to the particular assessment. Finish by checking whether another reader could reproduce the comparison, read every figure independently and trace each conclusion to a result.

If a sentence moves from association to cause, identify the control or design feature that supports the move. If none exists, narrow the language. That discipline strengthens rather than weakens the report because it makes the evidence boundary explicit.

Report a relative biomass difference

Q [4 marks]. Control biomass is 8.4 g and treatment biomass is 10.5 g. Calculate percent increase and report it without claiming significance. This drill's weighting is not the University's official marking scheme.

Investigation is iterative rather than linear. A question shapes design and data collection, interpretation tests the prediction, and limitations lead to a refined question instead of a forced conclusion.
  • +1Difference is 10.5 minus 8.4, or 2.1 g.
  • +1Divide 2.1 by the 8.4 g control baseline.
  • +1Multiply by 100 to obtain 25%.
  • +1State that mean biomass was 25% higher without calling it significant.
Mean biomass was 25% higher under treatment than control; significance requires variation, sample size and an appropriate analysis.
Sia tip — Observation belongs in results; causal explanation belongs in discussion.
Glossary

Key terms

Hypothesis
A testable biological explanation for an observation.
Prediction
The expected result under specified conditions if a hypothesis is supported.
Experimental unit
The independent entity assigned to a treatment or comparison.
Confound
An uncontrolled difference that changes alongside the variable of interest.
Replication
Independent repetition used to estimate biological variation.
FAQ

Scientific Investigation and Communication FAQ

What makes a hypothesis testable?

It links variables through a biological explanation and permits an observation that could be inconsistent with it. A broad topic or desired outcome is not yet a testable hypothesis.

Why are repeated readings not independent replicates?

Repeated readings of one unit can improve measurement precision but do not capture variation among separately treated organisms or samples. Independence depends on treatment assignment and biological units.

What belongs in a results section?

State measured patterns, comparisons, magnitudes and statistical outcomes with figure references. Interpret biological meaning and evaluate alternatives in the discussion unless the task instructions specify a different structure.

Study strategy

Exam move

Take one practical and write its question, hypothesis, prediction, experimental unit, independent variable, response and controls on a single page. Sketch the most appropriate figure with units. Then write one result sentence and one separate interpretation sentence, ensuring the second does not exceed the evidence.

Mark biological replicates separately from repeated measurements, and identify which entity was independently assigned to treatment. Define every error bar and show individual observations when the sample permits. Rewrite one vague limitation as a source of uncertainty, its likely effect on interpretation and a design change that directly addresses it. Reserve causal verbs for designs that isolate the proposed cause.
