Variable Scale: When Size Changes Meaning

Week 8 makes a strong claim: scale is much more than physical size, because it shapes how we a thing, a body, a building or a space is understood in the first place, and a shift in it can leave something ordinary looking huge, delicate, funny, uneasy or hard to place. The studio tests it with two exercises.

Repeated symbols build size out of multiplication rather than enlargement, and then one small textured object, brought from outside, is drawn twice: once at life size and once at an exaggerated scale, with the second drawing pushed beyond the boundaries of the page.

The chapter separates the three different things the word scale means in this week, sets out what the standard sheet sizes actually cost in area, and shows how stating the enlargement factor turns two pictures into a controlled comparison.

Reading a scale pair as one experiment

Q [4 marks]. The mark allocation below is ours, used to show where the effort sits, and is not published by the University for this unit. You have drawn a four-centimetre seedpod at life size on A4 and at six times life size on A3. Write the diary entry that treats the two as a single experiment.
  • 1State the factor and the sheets, since those are the experimental conditions and everything else is attributed to them.
  • 1Describe what the life-size drawing turned out to be about. At four centimetres on A4 the object is an incident in a field, so the drawing is unavoidably about the emptiness around it.
  • 1Describe the category change in the enlarged version. Ridges stop being marks and become forms with a lit side, a turning edge and a cast shadow, which makes tonal modelling necessary rather than optional.
  • 1State the finding rather than a preference. The change was in the category of what was drawn, not in the amount of detail: at life size a textured object, at six times a structured landscape.
An entry that names the factor, reports what each drawing turned out to be about, and concludes that enlargement converted texture into form. It contains no judgement about which drawing is better.
Sia tip — Resist writing that the larger drawing has more detail. More detail is a consequence of the size, not a finding; the finding is what stopped being one kind of thing and became another.

Key terms

Variable scale
Working the same subject at more than one size in order to find what the size change itself does to meaning.
Life size
Drawn at the same dimensions as the object. One option among many rather than a default, and in this week it is the control condition.
Enlargement factor
The stated multiple between the object and the drawing, such as three or six times. Writing it down is what makes two drawings a comparison.
Negative space
The area a drawing leaves empty, surrounding and separating the things in it. At life size on a large sheet it usually becomes the real subject.
Pattern
Lines, shapes, marks or colours set out in a repeating order. It builds scale by multiplication rather than by enlargement.

Why does the enlargement factor need to be written down?

Because without it you have two drawings and with it you have an experiment. A stated multiple lets you attribute what changed to the size change rather than to effort or mood, and it gives your reflection something specific to be about. Bigger is not a factor.

What if my object is smooth?

Enlargement will reveal almost nothing and the second drawing becomes the first one made larger. Either choose a different object, or change what is being enlarged: the reflections in a glass surface contain a compressed image of the whole room, and at six times life size that distortion is genuinely new information.

When does a size change actually change meaning?

When it alters the relationship between the object and the body of the person looking. A hand-sized thing is handled, a body-sized thing is confronted, a room-sized thing is entered. The meaning changes at those thresholds rather than smoothly, which is why monumental versions of domestic objects are unsettling.

How do I stop a repeated pattern becoming decorative?

Make the repetition carry a quantity or vary systematically. One mark per minute worked turns the field into a record of duration; reducing pressure row by row gives the field a direction and therefore a beginning and an end. Repetition without a variable is wallpaper.

Choose the object before the class rather than grabbing something from your bag, because texture is the whole of this week and a smooth object wastes the exercise. Measure it, decide a factor, and write the factor in the diary next to both drawings. Expect the enlarged drawing to require the tonal method from the light and tone week, since ridges and pits stop being texture marks and become small forms with their own light.

Photograph the enlarged surface details separately, and keep a print of one drawing accessible, because the following week asks you to bring a printed photograph of a favourite drawing from the semester.
