EDPD5014 Chap.11 Research Critique for Professional Practice
Research Critique for Professional Practice
Research critique tests the route from a study to a professional decision. This chapter begins with accurate summary, then examines location, participants, design, measures, reliability, internal validity, external validity and unreported information. Limitations are not collected decoratively: each one must change confidence, scope or action.
The final recommendation is proportionate to the evidence and states what additional observation would justify adoption, adaptation, a monitored trial or rejection for the present context.
Accurate summary is the first quality control. State the purpose, participants, context, design, comparison, measures, result and conclusion in your own words.
Do not copy the abstract or begin evaluation before the authors' claim is represented fairly. A critique of a stronger claim than the paper makes is easy to write and professionally useless.
Internal validity concerns the inference within the study. Selection, attrition, alternate instruction, measurement practice, inconsistent delivery and expectations can offer rival explanations.
Choose the threat that plausibly changes the conclusion rather than listing every textbook limitation. Then explain how a design feature controls, fails to control or leaves that alternative uncertain.
Measurement links observation to claim. Reliability supports consistency, but a reliable score may still fail to represent connected reading, durable learning or transfer.
Compare the exact outcome measure with the noun used in the conclusion. A claim about lasting comprehension requires evidence beyond immediate researcher-made items, and a claim about classroom impact requires conditions resembling classroom use.
External validity asks how the mechanism travels across learners, curricula, languages, settings and resources.
A strong result in an intensive clinic may justify a monitored school trial rather than unchanged adoption. Finish with a proportionate decision and the evidence that would strengthen it. Critique is complete when the limitation changes what a professional should do, not when the paper has accumulated the largest number of objections.

Worked example · free
Review a small intervention study
- 1State the observed gain without extending it beyond the reported items and period.
- 1Examine comparison, selection, attrition, implementation and alternate instruction.
- 1Ask whether measures include new items, connected reading and retention.
- 1Recommend only a proportionate monitored trial of the relevant mechanism.
Key terms
- Internal validity
- The strength of a causal inference within the studied conditions after plausible alternatives are considered.
- External validity
- The extent to which a finding can travel across people, settings, measures and delivery conditions.
- Measurement validity
- The degree to which an outcome measure supports the interpretation made from its scores.
Research Critique for Professional Practice FAQ
What should an accurate research summary include?
State the purpose, participants, context, design, intervention or comparison, measures, main result and authors' conclusion in your own words. Keep summary separate from evaluation. A critique cannot be fair if it changes the study's claim before testing whether the design and evidence support it.
How is internal validity different from external validity?
Internal validity asks whether the studied condition plausibly produced the observed result rather than an alternative. External validity asks how far the finding travels across learners, settings, measures and implementation conditions. Strong internal evidence does not guarantee unchanged transfer to a different school context.
What makes a limitation analytically useful?
A useful limitation changes confidence, scope or action. Explain the inference it weakens and how the professional decision should narrow. Statements such as small sample or short duration are incomplete until you show whether they affect precision, representation, retention or another part of the recommendation.
How can a critique express uncertainty precisely?
Distinguish evidence that a reported effect is unlikely to be sampling noise from evidence that it is educationally important, transferable and feasible. A confident result on a narrow measure may still support only a narrow claim. Conversely, an imperfect study can justify a cautious monitored trial when the mechanism is plausible, costs are proportionate and local outcomes can be checked.
State the decision threshold in advance: what result would warrant continuation, adaptation or withdrawal? This turns critique into professional reasoning and clarifies which uncertainty matters for the immediate choice and which question requires further research.
Assessment move
Write a six-sentence review of one study: purpose and claim, participants and context, design strength, most consequential limitation, transfer boundary and proportionate action. Remove any limitation that does not change the decision. Then identify one additional measure or comparison that would justify a stronger recommendation if its result supported the mechanism.
