Building a Critical Literature Review

This chapter moves from accurate extraction to critical synthesis. A matrix compares studies by context, method, finding and limitation; paragraphs are organised around claims rather than authors; and review structures are selected for thematic, methodological, chronological or contextual reasons.

It also shows how to represent disagreement fairly, write precise attribution, identify meaningful gaps and finish sections with what the combined literature warrants.

Synthesising mixed participation evidence

Q [5 marks]. Combine observation, interview and survey findings about classroom participation without treating them as the same evidence. Treat the five synthesis moves as AskSia practice scaffolding rather than official assessment criteria.

  • +1State a claim several sources can test. The mark allocation is not a university assessment scheme; it segments this synthesis drill.
  • +1Identify convergence across distinct constructs.
  • +1Explain the methodological contrast.
  • +1Qualify association and causal language.
  • +1Land on an implication for the review question.
Structured preparation may widen participation, but behavioural and experiential evidence show that opportunity and social safety should be evaluated separately.
Sia tip — Begin each paragraph with the claim that makes the selected sources belong together.
Glossary

Key terms

Synthesis
An evidence-grounded explanation of patterns, differences or boundaries across sources.
Convergence
Agreement among sources that may strengthen a bounded interpretation.
Negative case
Evidence that complicates an emerging pattern and helps define its boundary.
Research gap
A consequential unresolved question, contradiction, context or measurement weakness in existing knowledge.
FAQ

Building a Critical Literature Review FAQ

How is synthesis different from summary?

Summary reports what each source says. Synthesis compares sources to explain a pattern, disagreement, mechanism or boundary. The paragraph should make a claim that needs several sources and then show what their differences mean.

Can I organise the review one article at a time?

That structure usually hides the field-level answer. Organise around themes, mechanisms, methods or contexts, then bring sources together within each section. Use source-specific detail only where it advances the comparison.

How do I write a defensible research gap?

Name the reviewed scope and the consequential uncertainty, such as a missing context, inconsistent result or weakly measured construct. Avoid declaring that no research exists unless the search can genuinely support that absolute claim.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Create a synthesis matrix before drafting prose. Group rows by the claim they can test, not by reading order. Draft topic sentences without citations first, then add evidence for convergence, contrast and qualification. Highlight claims, evidence and interpretation in different colours during revision. End each section with what is supported, what remains uncertain and why the next section or proposed inquiry follows.

Begin the matrix with columns that matter to your question, not every detail reported in each paper. Useful columns often include context, participants, construct definition, design, evidence, main finding, limitation and role in the argument. Write short analytic notes in cells and keep direct quotations separate.

When several studies appear to agree, compare whether they measured the same outcome and used similar time frames. Apparent convergence can disappear when one study measures perception and another measures behaviour. Draft a provisional section map using complete claim sentences. Place each source under every claim it can legitimately test, then look for sections supported by only one type of evidence or one context.

Seek contrary or boundary evidence before writing. Within paragraphs, move from claim to selected evidence, contrast, interpretation and a bounded landing. Avoid opening consecutive sentences with author names; that usually signals that the paragraph follows sources rather than reasoning. During revision, reverse-outline the draft by writing one sentence for each paragraph's job.

Merge repeated jobs and insert transitions that explain why the next comparison matters. Audit strong verbs such as proves, demonstrates and causes against the underlying designs. Complete a fairness check by applying the same methodological scrutiny to evidence you welcome and evidence you dislike.

The final conclusion should answer the review question, identify the conditions shaping the pattern and show precisely why the proposed practitioner inquiry follows. After the first draft, remove author names from topic sentences and see whether the argument remains intelligible. If a paragraph collapses, it may still be a source summary.

Replace the opening with the pattern or dispute the paragraph will establish, then reintroduce citations beside precise evidence. Read section endings together as a miniature review; they should form a logical progression toward the conclusion. Check that a stated gap emerges from the synthesis rather than appearing suddenly in the final paragraph.

Use the finished matrix to verify that no source has been credited with a method, population or finding it did not report. Practise oral synthesis before final drafting. Explain one theme using three studies without naming them in discovery order. A listener should hear the pattern, contrast and boundary before the bibliography.

If the explanation turns into separate mini-summaries, return to the matrix and write the relationship among studies in one sentence. Use that sentence as the paragraph spine. Close by reading the section landings alone and confirming that together they answer the review question rather than repeat the outline.
