Research Design and Quality Decisions

A persuasive food-science result depends on design before calculation. This chapter defines the question, experimental unit, treatment, comparison, response variable and decision threshold, then uses randomisation, replication, standardisation and controls to protect the inference.

It distinguishes technical repeatability from independent evidence and turns results into recommendations that acknowledge uncertainty, scope and possible alternative explanations. Allocation diagrams and design audits expose pseudoreplication before analysis, when the experiment can still be repaired rather than merely qualified.

Repair a storage-temperature experiment

Q [4 marks]. One tray of fruit is stored at each of three temperatures and ten fruit per tray are measured. Can the analyst claim ten independent replicates per treatment? The mark allocation for this audit is not an official University assessment scheme.

No. The treatment was applied once per temperature, so the ten fruit are subsamples; independent trays or equivalent units are needed for replicated treatment inference.
Sia tip — Ask what received the treatment independently. That object is usually the experimental unit.
Glossary

Key terms

Experimental unit
The smallest unit independently assigned to a treatment.
Control
A comparison condition that helps isolate the effect of the treatment or detect procedural failure.
Randomisation
Chance-based allocation or ordering used to reduce systematic association between treatment and nuisance factors.
Pseudoreplication
Treating non-independent observations as if they were independent treatment replicates.
FAQ

Research Design and Quality Decisions FAQ

How is the experimental unit identified?

Ask what object or batch received the treatment independently. If an entire tray is stored at one temperature, measurements from several fruit inside it are subsamples unless fruit themselves were independently assigned and exposed. The unit is determined by treatment allocation, not by the number of readings.

Why are controls and randomisation both needed?

A control supplies a meaningful comparison, while randomisation reduces systematic links between treatments and nuisance factors such as position, time or sample order. Neither replaces the other. Together with replication and standardisation, they make alternative explanations less plausible and support a cleaner treatment inference.

How should a recommendation handle uncertainty?

State the observed effect, the design and population it applies to, and the main limitation that could affect transfer. Recommend an action only at the scale justified by replication and conditions. If evidence is preliminary, propose a verification trial rather than presenting a single experiment as a universal rule.

What is pseudoreplication in a food experiment?

Pseudoreplication occurs when several measurements sharing one treatment application are analysed as independent treatment replicates. Ten fruit in one temperature chamber do not create ten independent chamber treatments. They can improve estimation within that chamber, but wider inference requires independently assigned chambers, trays, batches or other true units.

Identify the level receiving treatment before counting replicates or selecting an analysis.

Study strategy

Exam move

For every practical, complete a design card with question, hypothesis, experimental unit, treatment, control, independent replicates, subsamples, response variable and planned conclusion. Draw the allocation before analysing results. When reviewing an answer, circle every broad claim and ask whether the sampling and replication support that scope.

Practise rewriting overconfident recommendations into bounded decisions with a verification step. Start by converting a general topic into a decision and mechanism. Instead of asking whether cold storage is good, ask whether a defined temperature changes firmness over a stated period in fruit of specified maturity. Predict the direction through a physiological pathway, then choose a response that can reveal it.

This makes the hypothesis testable and the final recommendation traceable. Identify the experimental unit by asking what receives treatment independently. If one chamber receives each temperature, fruit within a chamber are subsamples rather than independent temperature replicates. Redraw the design with several independently allocated units or use an appropriate blocking structure.

Label technical repeats separately because repeated instrument readings estimate measurement variation but do not reproduce the treatment. Construct an allocation diagram before collecting data. Add randomisation to reduce systematic association with sample order or position, and blocking when a known factor such as batch, maturity or day should be represented across treatments.

Define the control as the same handling and measurement without the active change. A control that differs in several ways cannot isolate the mechanism. Build a response-variable table containing operational definition, unit, method, timing and acceptance boundary. Match every response to the predicted mechanism. Record exclusions and deviations without using the observed result to invent criteria afterward.

When interpreting, distinguish statistical or numerical difference from practical quality relevance. Examine raw patterns, variation and possible bias before summarising. Write recommendations in three layers: what the experiment observed, where the inference applies and what verification is needed before wider adoption. Create deliberate pseudoreplication examples with trays, vats or rooms and correct them aloud.

Finish by peer-auditing a practical report using five questions: was treatment independently replicated, was allocation protected, did the measurement match the mechanism, were units and uncertainty retained, and is the claim narrower than the design?
