Decision Problems and Research Questions

Why Decision Problems and Research Questions matters

The unit opens by distinguishing marketing decisions from the information a research project must produce. The chapter therefore treats management decision problem, research problem and research question as different reasoning roles.

Management Decision Problem defines the object and scale; research problem explains a relationship or transformation; research question checks whether the preferred account survives a changed condition.

The central application is to translate managerial uncertainty into a researchable question without assuming the answer.

For Management Decision Problem, begin by recording what is observed or supplied, then separate that evidence from the interpretation placed on it. For Management Decision Problem, this matters because a correct term can still be attached to the wrong object, time scale, comparison or decision.

Trace the mechanism

Explain research problem with an active verb and a visible chain.

Name the starting condition, the change or relation, and the outcome. For Management Decision Problem, if the evidence admits another reading, state the extra observation that would distinguish the accounts rather than pretending the ambiguity has disappeared.

Use research question as a real test. Change one relevant fact while holding unrelated conditions fixed.

For Management Decision Problem, then identify the first step that fails, retain the premises that remain supported and propagate only the consequences of the repair. This produces a controlled revision instead of a second unrelated answer.

Keep the boundary operational

A broad business symptom is not yet a research problem; scope, decision use and information gap must be specified.

For Management Decision Problem, in practice, the boundary should tell you what to inspect, calculate, compare or qualify.

For Management Decision Problem, a generic limitations sentence is not enough; name the evidence that would move the case outside the model and the narrower claim that would remain defensible.

For Management Decision Problem, build a compact evidence ledger with four columns: observation, concept, inference and alternative. Put management decision problem and research problem in different rows before combining them.

For Management Decision Problem, this makes it easier to find a scale error, reversed direction or hidden assumption before it reaches the conclusion.

Prepare for assessment

Practise by reconstructing management decision problem, research problem and research question without notes.

For Management Decision Problem, complete a changed version of the chapter task, compare it with the initial case and explain why the result remains, narrows or reverses. For Management Decision Problem, keep the answer tied to the evidence instead of reproducing a memorised paragraph.

For Management Decision Problem, when using a table, diagram or calculation, check that it expresses the same relationship as the prose.

For Management Decision Problem, labels must identify the actual variables or geological objects, arrows must follow the claimed direction, and units or scales must remain visible wherever they affect interpretation.

A strong response finishes by answering the question at the supported scale.

For Management Decision Problem, it does not assert that a rule, hurdle or condition is absent merely because it was not found in one item. For Management Decision Problem, administrative uncertainty belongs in a direction to confirm on Canvas; conceptual uncertainty belongs in the reasoning itself.

Finally, keep a repair log.

For Management Decision Problem, record the first failed move, why it failed and the check that would catch it next time. For Decision Problems and Research Questions, the most useful entries distinguish misclassification of management decision problem, an unsupported research problem link and a research question test that cannot actually alter the conclusion.

Decision Problems and Research Questions changed-case audit

Q [7 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. Translate managerial uncertainty into a researchable question without assuming the answer. Change one condition and explain whether the conclusion survives. The weighting is a study aid, not a University marking scheme.
  • 2Define management decision problem at the case scale.
  • 2Trace research problem through the evidence.
  • 3Use research question to qualify the result.
The model response fixes management decision problem, makes the research problem link explicit, changes one relevant condition and uses research question to retain, narrow or reverse the conclusion. It remains inside this boundary: A broad business symptom is not yet a research problem; scope, decision use and information gap must be specified.
Sia tip — Write the first sentence in which research problem changes the result; then test that sentence with research question.
Glossary

Key terms

Management Decision Problem
Management Decision Problem names the starting concept for the task to Translate managerial uncertainty into a researchable question without assuming the answer. It fixes the relevant evidence and scale before interpretation begins.
Research Problem
Research Problem describes the link required to Translate managerial uncertainty into a researchable question without assuming the answer. Its direction must be stated and supported by observed or supplied evidence.
Research Question
Research Question is the diagnostic used while attempting to Translate managerial uncertainty into a researchable question without assuming the answer. It tests the preferred account against this limit: A broad business symptom is not yet a research problem; scope, decision use and information gap must be specified.
FAQ

Decision Problems and Research Questions FAQ

When should a researcher narrow the Management Decision Problem claim using Research Question?

The unit opens by distinguishing marketing decisions from the information a research project must produce. The practical response is to translate managerial uncertainty into a researchable question without assuming the answer. Use this boundary to decide what survives: A broad business symptom is not yet a research problem; scope, decision use and information gap must be specified.

Name the altered evidence, repair the first affected link, and report a qualified conclusion.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Retrieve management decision problem, research problem and research question; complete the changed case; then repair the first move that violates this boundary: A broad business symptom is not yet a research problem; scope, decision use and information gap must be specified.
