PMGT5887 Chap.1 Project Foundations, the PMO and the Talent Triangle
Project Foundations, the PMO and the Talent Triangle
The first workshop of Computer Applications is a refresher of project management before any software is opened, and everything later in the semester hangs on it. This chapter sets out the PMBOK Guide picture the slides use: five process groups that a project passes through over time, from initiating to closing, and ten knowledge areas, from integration to stakeholder management, that are looked after throughout.
It explains why an activity belongs to one process group yet can serve several knowledge areas, and how the scope, time and cost triangle frames every trade-off a tool later makes visible. It then turns to the organisation around a project: what a project management office does, the four organisational influences on how projects run, and the three kinds of expertise in the PMI Talent Triangle.
The chapter closes with the six learning outcomes for the unit and the Week 1 question every team answers, which delivery challenges software can help with, so that each later application is read as an answer to a real problem. Its vocabulary is assumed by every weekly quiz that follows.

Sorting a launch checklist into process groups
- +1Signing the charter authorises the project, so it is Initiating; building the schedule is Planning.
- +1Briefing the agency is doing the planned work, so it is Executing; reviewing spend against budget is Monitoring and Controlling.
- +1The lessons-learned session is Closing; approving a date change is also control work, because it responds to a variance from the plan.
Key terms
- Process Group
- One of five stages a project passes through: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing.

- Project Management Office
- A unit that standardises project governance and shares resources, methods, tools and techniques across projects.
- Organisational Process Assets
- Shared templates, policies, procedures and documents an organisation provides for its projects to reuse.
- PMI Talent Triangle
- PMI's model of a project manager's skills as technical, leadership, and strategic and business management expertise.
Project Foundations, the PMO and the Talent Triangle FAQ
What is the difference between a process group and a knowledge area?
A process group says when work happens in the life of a project, such as planning or closing. A knowledge area says what is being managed, such as cost or risk, and runs through every process group.
What does a project management office actually do?
It manages resources shared between projects, develops methodology and standards, coaches and trains, audits whether projects follow its templates and policies, keeps shared documents up to date and coordinates communication between projects.
Why does a software unit start with project management theory?
Every application in the semester supports one or more knowledge areas. Knowing the area first lets you choose the right tool and use its features with a purpose, which is what the learning outcomes ask for.
Which organisational factors influence how a project runs?
The Week 1 slides list four: the organisation's culture and style, its degree of project management maturity, the project management systems already in place, and the organisational structure around the project.
What does the project management triangle show?
It shows scope, time and cost pulling against each other with quality in the middle. Tightening one side forces a change in another, which is why every schedule or budget decision in the later software weeks is really a trade-off.
Assessment move
Draw the process groups as five boxes across a page and the knowledge areas as ten rows beneath them, then place ten real activities from a project you know into the grid. Learn the PMO functions as a short list and say each one aloud with an example. For the Talent Triangle, pair each kind of expertise with the question it answers. This chapter is vocabulary-heavy, so test yourself with quick recall rather than rereading.
Weekly Quiz 1 follows this topic and gives you five questions in about five minutes, so speed of recall matters as much as understanding. Pair this chapter with the team charter chapter, because your team is formed in the same workshop and the charter is due at the end of the first week.
